We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Edward Bryan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Edward, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Growing up I was able to find ways to work and money. One time in particular I learned to cut grass and so I bought a used lawnmower and would go around the neighborhood and can’t grass and made good money as a kid. But I never came from money so I always had to find a way. Well this particular time of my life I left Columbus,GA and moved to my father’s place in Huntsville,AL. I had a really tough time adjusting to the different living conditions and such. I transferred high school at this time which I then I was in the 10th grade supposedly going to 11. But since I came from one school district in Georgia to another school district in Alabama, my credit in line will for me to be able to graduate on time so I needed to do summer school to be on the same page as my peers.
Unfortunately, my father didn’t have the funds to have any place in summer school for that summer. I’ll never forget this. I had a course I was taking that was called drama and the teacher name Mr. Mike Chapel. He wasn’t a regular teacher. He really was into his students and care for him.
School is coming to an end for summer break and I really was having a tough time trying to figure out how was I going to attend summer school so I can make sure I’ll going to graduate when I needed to. Mr. Chapel seen that I was having a tough time and kind of pulled me to the slide and spoke to me about what I was dealing with. I shared what was going on and told him that I was trying to figure out a way that I can go to summer school so I could still be on track for graduating.
So school is near ending and I have maybe three weeks left before summer break and and I get called into Mr. Chapel’s office and he wanted to let me know how great of a job I’ve done and that semester and he knows that I would do well going forward. So I’m thinking it’s just a normal sit down about my next moves as becoming a junior and what elections I wanna pursue but then he stated his church heard about my situation and circumstances and they paid my full summer school tuition so I wouldn’t have to worry about being left behind. Mike Chapel really changed my life at that moment because I never thought that someone would care about another student so much that they will go that far and assisting a student. So Mr. Mike Chapel if you’re reading this I want to thank you so much for what you’ve done for me. That’s today’s day. I still act and I’m still an artist because you never gave up on me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello my name is Edward Bryan. I am 40 years old. I am from Central America was born in Panama 🇵🇦 and raised in Columbus, Georgia. At age 17 I graduated high school and I knew I wanted to do something that will keep my life in the best possible position so I joined the active army. From here, I did four years with two army combat deployments. Then I joined the army National Guard in which I’ve been in now for 18 years with four deployments, including one hardship tour
In 2005 is where I started my career working here in Atlanta as an actor. I’ve been working as an actor in television movies and commercials here in Atlanta market and still going Strong. I haven’t made the overnight success yet, but I’m still chasing my dreams.
Throughout my journey, as after I have dabbled into entrepreneurship in which I’ve owned several different entities. One in particular is what I still do now is a bounce house party rental company. This company has been self sustaining and doesn’t have a huge overhead. The name of the company is that my daughter Bella bounce houses here in Douglasville Georgia. If I could do something for the rest of my life will be a working actor on television film, but until then I work as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So, I’ve done a few jobs and owned a couple of businesses. I opened up a soft spa with the intent of running out roofs that would generate revenue while also marketing the business. That didn’t work out so well lost a lot of money and eventually had to close the business. But that didn’t deter me. I want more so I decided to open up a franchise with me and my sister. It started out well and then halfway through the year it was hard to survive, and I struggled to maintain the business until I had to give it up with my sister. This journey has proved to me that success doesn’t come easy. You must keep going and learn from the failures to grow individually and professionally.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
One thing that I found out about being a business owner, you must have a good amount of liquid assets that you can touch whenever you need to make sure your business is afloat. With knowing that you can borrow money from a lender is Security unless your business fails And you cannot pay the note then it becomes an issue. Be very mindful when you do borrow money that you do not pull up your personal assets for through vehicle liens or house liens.
