We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eduardo Sierra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eduardo below.
Hi Eduardo, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Interesting question. If it had been earlier, I would not have started at all!
It was recently that I started to work on user research projects. Understanding how users experience products and prototypes piqued my curiosity about design.
I went on to create icons, UI interfaces and module mockups on Figma. However, UI design has its guidelines and I wanted to have autonomy to explore my creativity.
So I started to experiment with graphic design software, attending design meetups to create and connect with artists, and shamelessly putting my work out there.
It hasn’t been easy; at times, I’ve questioned my decisions and felt that my art was not good enough. There have been moments when I’ve considered giving up, but I said to myself: you didn’t come this far to only come this far.
It’s only been a couple of years since I embarked on this creative journey and I would not change a thing. The process has taught me patience and resilience, to embrace opportunities in whatever way they come.
Good things happen when you least expect them, so I’m happy to have started when I did.
It’s been an amazing and wild ride, I can’t wait to see what comes next!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve worked in market research for over 10 years and now I am on my isometric illustrator journey.
Art is powerful, it gives me the privilege to express myself. I can go all out to create unique isometric artwork for my clients.
Let me tell you a little bit about how I got started: in market research, you have creative flexibility. Each project is unique and requires different methods to get the insights you need.
It comes in handy when you must change course and get yourself back on track towards your research goal. The flexibility to experiment is what inspired me to start illustrating.
I began exploring styles and created art on a whim. I felt that my work lacked purpose and identity, my focus at that moment was on quantity rather than quality and quickly became frustrated.
I kept looking into other styles, and that’s when I found isometric art. The challenge of drawing objects in 3D caught my eye. Working with perspectives wasn’t easy though. Sometimes I had to start over because my illustrations didn’t make sense.
I’ve soaked in the growing pains, and although there’s still so much to learn, I am proud of my progress so far and also because I get to pursue my passion.
Now that I’ve found an art style that I love, I’m looking forward to what my imagination can bring to life!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Embracing my vulnerability,
I love that I can express my emotions through my work. Creating without limits is liberating, I get to challenge ideas and work towards becoming better every day. It’s also important that I stay true to myself to develop and nurture genuine connections.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Some people ask why I am going through this path.
They don’t understand that I am no longer settling, I am pursuing something that drives and inspires me. All I need is to believe in myself, and that’s enough courage to go after what I want in life.
If I suppress my creativity, I am denying myself the endless possibilities to create beautiful things.
You need to make peace with the fact that not everyone will understand your journey. Instead of conforming to expectations, wouldn’t you rather do it your way?
I am loving the process and I am excited to see where it takes me!
