We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eduardo Bryant. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eduardo below.
Alright, Eduardo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Quite simply, Corporate America spends the majority of it’s time on product knowledge and not enough time on skill development of its people.
Having great product knowledge is important however, people do business with people who they like and trust. This fall into the skill development category where people understand the art of connecting with others. This connect-ability is a high emotional intelligence trait and it’s a greater predictor of success than just smart product knowledge.
The main issue is a lack of skill development training. Companies often rely on an employee’s years of service in an industry as the bench mark for success. If you want to become a high performer, increase your core skills and you will be more successful than you’ve ever been.
Eduardo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The old cliché, if you find something you love to do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Well, I’m doing my dream job!
I got started in the training business when I was a pharmaceutical sales rep. As a result of winning President’s Club a number of times, the managers starting having all the new reps spend time in the field shadowing me as part of their onboarding. This is when I new I could help people develop their skills.
I run a boutique training company where we specialize in custom built leadership and sales training workshops. The landscape for most of our clients is they’re playing in a competitive market where the competition is trying to gain market share, at their expense.
We’re different than most companies because we don’t use PowerPoint to run our skill development workshops. We believe in the concept of peer to peer learning where the training is done through a series of interactive learning activities.
We are most proud of the work we do in helping clients reach their goals. Our clients enjoy partnering with us because we’re professional, timely, and very thorough. If a company is looking to grow its market share, increase revenue, or become the dominant player in their space, our skill development methodology is a proven game changer. This goes back to the never working a day in your life quote. We are good at what we do and we enjoy it that much.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My business has pivoted twice, I’ll share both. I started out as a motivational speaker, inspiring people to be great at whatever they do. My talk focused on “What does excellence look like.” When companies needed to cut cost, bringing in a motivational speaker was among the first things to be cut. I pivoted to running training workshops because I knew I could still make a difference in people’s lives.
I had to pivoted a second time when covid hit and companies stopped bringing their people together for in-person meetings. I had to pivot and place all of my workshops online in an on-demand format. So now, people had the ability to access a topic that they have identify as a area of need.
Any advice for managing a team?
Being respected as a manager is worth its weight in gold. Leadership is about showing people how things should be done, rather telling them to go do it.
Morale is directly tied to leadership. If you’re a manager and you lead a team, show your people you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and work right along with them. You will be respected and morale will increase.
