We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Edie Karras a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Edie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I truly don’t think I could survive without creative outlets. I do work full time at a meaningful job, and have a wife, son, house, animals – all great BUT- my photography, and now my picture book projects are all my own.
It’s so satisfying to have an endeavor that’s completely under your control; even if the end results often surprise you.
Edie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been taking pictures for over 30 years. I used to participate in art fairs, markets and exhibits. Over the years I created all kinds of products with my images: ceramic tiles, scarves, earrings, and of course different kinds of printed works.
A couple of years ago I started researching children’s books, and wondering if my imagery would lend itself to picture books, and it does! I created my first book in the Spring of 2022, and my second book is in production now. I also have a draft of a third book for later down the line.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Cheaper marketing.
Seriously, I get that everybody needs to make money, but it would be great if there were more price breaks for artists for advertising and promotion.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Getting pictures sent back to me of adults reading my books to kids! I love it! Seeing their little faces lit up, and hearing parent or teacher comments about how their child loves my book and asks for it often. So satisfying.
