We recently connected with Edgar Alminar and have shared our conversation below.
Edgar, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The theory that you have to put in 10,000 hours of work/practice to master something is definitely true. I put in thousands of hours in my recording studio and DJing events, and I still don’t feel anywhere near a mastery level. Staying up late nights, into the early hours of the morning, and hibernating away from friends and family is a sacrifice you will have to make if you want to move things along. That being said, when you are passionate about your craft, it never feels like work, or sacrifice, or tedious.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am DJ/producer from San Diego, CA with a genuine, deep passion for producing and DJing. If I’m not hibernating in the studio or DJing events, I’m probably attending a concert or having an intense debate or discussion about music. I started with piano lessons at a young age, joined the marching band in high school, then switched from b-boying to DJing and then found a love for beats and production. I always had a love for music; I just needed to find where I fit in and where my passion truly lied. I can produce any genre of music and DJ any kind of event; I have experience across the spectrum. I truly love music, producing, and DJing. I am most proud of the projects I have produced and all the fun events I have been a part of.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
It takes time to create and craft projects, DJ sets, etc. It takes time to learn the craft and get good at anything. Inspiration comes when it is ready. Creative blocks come and go, but inspiration will find its way to you.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the synergy between event attendees (i.e., live shows/concerts, weddings) and myself. There is nothing better than a crowd singing along to songs that you are playing, or better yet, produced. I live for the look on people’s faces when they love what you’re playing and you look them in the eye and connect on that level.
