We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eddie White a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Eddie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?

I have a regular job as a dentist. I created an original music venue and community in 2008 with the help of my then-middle school son Clay. He is now 32 years old and still plays music every day. I have a sense of well-being by bringing folks together around music and hopefully have changed a few lives along the way. It’s always the people who make the magic; creating an environment that allows self-expression and creativity is a good thing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Awendaw Green is a community gathering space that allows artists to showcase their original music and connect every Wednesday evening all year round! I have found that the power to gather and mingle is good for the soul and builds a sense of belonging. The music is the glue, but a space to connect is the magic.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

14 years ago we realized that our original location was not zoned for public gatherings and had to move two doors South. It was rather stressful and I was unsure how it would work out. We reimagined things and the property owners were great. We have since built an even better space to gather and have continued to look for ways to simplify our approach.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

It sure helps to have a product that is reflective of the online presentation. We started small and grew organically. I am not sure that works as well now with the dynamics of different portals and the algorithm-driven flow. I hope to create a transformational experience that folks will want to help spread the good musical word so others can enjoy the same.
