We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eddie Ramos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Eddie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
Growing up I had no idea I would ever start a coaching business. In 2015, two years after I moved to Los Angeles I started an online acting blog called The Modern Actor. I wanted a place to document what I was experiencing as an actor in LA and share some of the tips I was learning along the way. In 2018, I added a newsletter and out of the blue I received an email from a young man asking if I could teach him how to become an actor. I went back and forth with myself debating whether I had anything to really teach him, as I didn’t have any Oscars on my shelf or 3-picture deals lined up. Who was I to give advice? Despite my initial lack of confidence, something told me to go for it. I reminded myself I had learned a lot as an actor for over 10 years and being able to teach sparked something deep inside of me. I’m so glad I listened to that voice.
That first lesson, I was really nervous but extremely excited. We read through an acting scene and spoke about the industry — I could start to see the makings of a real business start to form right before my eyes. After the hour ended, the young man said, “Okay, so what are we doing next class?!” I was deeply moved and got right to work. So, that’s how The Modern Actor Coaching was born. Since then, I’ve created in-depth courses and have coached over 300 students! I will forever be grateful to the young man who set me on my entrepreneurial journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started acting at 9 years old in New York City. The production that started it all for me was an Off-Broadway play called Rags. After that, I was hooked on acting and did every school play growing up.
I decided to pursue a major in Acting at Syracuse University in 2009 and graduated with my B.F.A. in Acting and Minor in Political Science in 2013.
During my senior year at S.U. I was 1 of 20 that was selected from our class to come to Los Angeles as part of Sorkin Week, an all-expense intensive week developed by S.U. alum Aaron Sorkin.
While in Los Angeles, I got my big break when I was the single student from my class to be offered management in LA. A few weeks after graduation I signed with my first manager and headed to the west coast. I haven’t looked back since!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first created The Modern Actor social media pages my audience wasn’t that large. What started to really stick with my audience and helped me gain new followers was a commitment to posting regularly, posting quality content, and defining a certain aesthetic and voice on the page.
My advice for anyone first starting out would be to create a combination of visual and video content and study the insights provided from the platform to figure out what really gets your audience excited and create more of that!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
As I established my business model, I thought back to what I needed when I first started acting. For me that was 1-1 mentorship with an actor who was already doing the things that I wanted to achieve. Most acting classes are group lessons where the teachers usually spend 5-10 minutes with each individual, and the majority of the learning is done by watching others. Although this certainly adds value, I knew my private lessons would be the thing that would set me apart from other acting coaches. Along with that, I am repeatedly told by my students that because I am a working actor, it gives them the motivation they need when pursuing their own careers.
