We recently connected with Eddie Pinero and have shared our conversation below.
Eddie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have always loved creating and using various methods to tell stories. The most important idea i attribute to success in a creative space is not being afraid to wander. Before I found my home as a speaker and built a business around the craft, I explored the things i loved to do. When i quit my corporate job my interests were music and creative writing. I then tried production, audio engineering, videography, etc until I found the intersection of what I loved most and what added value to the world. It’s hard to reach that point without being willing to explore, adapts and adjust. It’s a commitment to the process.

Eddie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Eddie Pinero is an internationally recognized TEDx speaker, speechwriter, YouTube influencer, and the founder of Your World Within, a motivational brand and digital platform inspiring millions around the world. Eddie’s journey started as an NCAA Division 1 rower and took him to the traditional rigors of the 9-to-5 corporate machine. Feeling that he had somehow lost his way, Eddie ultimately cut ties with the only world he’d ever known to pursue the high-risk, high-reward immersion into content creation. It was at this point his identity and sense of self-worth were truly tested. With his life savings dwindling and his thousands of hours of writing seemingly unnoticed, Eddie had to redefine his relationship with what would become his greatest ally: mindset. This fascination with the power of mindset would ultimately become his greatest interest and the source of his inspiration, as he began using the art of storytelling to convey how he was transforming the world around him by adjusting his perspective. As Eddie’s ideas and insights gained traction, he officially founded Your World Within. Using powerful spoken word and beautiful imagery, his YouTube channel and other online media would amass over 650,000 followers and 200 million total streams, as well as countless downloads and shares. His message was not only connecting with creators and entrepreneurs, but athletes, business owners, and countless others would relate to and consume his regularly produced content. Six years later, Eddie has spoken on stages all over the world, from his self-produced event, Your World Within Live, to the TEDx stage and international conferences. He has consulted and written speeches for Fortune 500 executives and uses the gift of inspiration through storytelling to help others capitalize on their untapped opportunities and maximize their potential. His daily YouTube videos and podcasts offer a blueprint to those looking for an edge as they navigate their day-to-day lives.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That perfectionism is a defense mechanism. We all have to unlearn the myth that something can’t be released, shared or distributed until it is flawless. This is fear masquerading as the noble pursuit of excellence. We grow when we move forward even when we are not ready. Think of this process as a staircase, where one steps out into a chaos they are ill prepared for. They then learn and adjust, as the once chaotic environment becomes normalized and propels them toward the next step in the staircase. This depicts growth as a consistent evolution. Another way to differentiate between progress and perfection is to look at the metaphorical thinker vs the doer. The thinker contemplates. He waits and analyzes, obsessing over the perfect path. The doer on the other hand steps out into the world, fails, learns from her mistakes, grows and continues forward. As creatives, entrepreneurs or anything else, it benefits us to play the role of doers. We should not be confined by the limitations of perfection, but inspired by the fact that life is supposed to be a messy work in progress.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I think in 2022 we get social media backwards. There are so many resources available to help “grow your social media quickly” or “get more followers on instagram.” Sure, I get the allure. Your social platforms are in many ways a resume. However, I see social media as a form of distribution, bringing your particular “value add” to the world. Social media in and of itself is not the product. Just like Amazon trucks are not the product. People value the items inside the truck that are being distributed.
When I set out to grow my brand and platform, the question I asked and continue to ask is “what can I do to be the 1% in the world at my craft?” That means continuing to attack the question, “how can i be the best speaker, storyteller, and communicator on the planet?” Obviously that is both ambitious and subjective, but the question forces me to consistently level up. It helps me see social media as a portrayal of depth and value, which ultimately comes through to the audience. I spent thousands of hours writing and recording that were never widely shared on my platforms or successful in the traditional sense. Now, when something goes viral, I think about those reps and how they created the present moment.
For someone starting out, I would advise that they seek out that middle ground. Yes, understand the platform and the tips and tricks. Yes, understand what captures the audience’s attention and how to generate interest with media. But most importantly, realize that without a deep expertise and value add, all of the other stuff becomes noise.
