We were lucky to catch up with Eddie Jelinet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eddie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project as an artist I think is creating my own style, in the life of any artist is very important to create something new or something that people can recognize you for, in my case when I decided to take my talent as a serious career, I decided that perfecting my technique and my skills as a painter would allow me to go in any direction of any style that I wanted to adopt as my own, so in my case I decided that there’s more territory to explore in the surrealism as it is more enriching for the mind of an artist. Something like dreaming awake. When I get an idea for a painting, photography or film, I let my mind think about the idea for awhile going around my head until is perfect and then I will feel very passionate to bring it into a materialized image. that for me is like magic! because after all the artist is creating beauty.
So that’s how I think I create my own style, letting my mind and imagination fly free to blend with the talent.
My biggest satisfaction in being an artist is to be free to create what I love.
Eddie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been an artist since I have memory, I started drawing since I was like 6 years old, then I painted my first mural at the age of 10 in a public school in Mexico, then I worked at a very young age doing different work as a muralist in Christian churches and a few schools. When I came to Los Angeles I decided to go in a more deep direction as an artist, so I studied art throughout the ages, read literature that would feed my mind to create the art that I was inspired to create, I think its very important for an artist to educate themselves about the history of art, that way you have a better understanding of the work that you are creating. You will see often in my work symbols of mythology, literature and different moments of history and cultures. When I make a piece of art I create a connection with every piece of work, so when people buy my pieces they not just getting an object to look at, they are taking home a piece of my imagination materialized in a painting, Lately I have been taking this into photography and short film, its something that I feel very proud of! Since every time I do any work for the camera I create all the scenes and products by hand, I build my own mask, props, make up etc.
That way you will see my art like it is a painting but throughout the camera in a photograph or a film.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I really think the artist community has a big problem. The big corporations are putting something that they call art in big museums and important galleries just to make money, forgetting about the real talented artists out there that are still in the underground but their work is totally amazing. I know personally many of those artist that deserve to be in the spotlight but sadly, museums are only exhibiting the largest installations so that people can go take pictures for their social media, making people get used to those types of installations instead the real art, Because of that, society is lowering their standards of what is a real piece of art, Just remember the old masters use to take years to complete their work, so now we have a banana or a toilet in a museum ” that’s a tragedy for the art” so in my opinion society should look away from mainstream and look for more of the quality art work that all my colleagues, artist in the underground are doing, Nowdays its so easy to educate ourselves with so much information in the internet, We have everything in a our hands now with a simple click, if you see your artist friends having a show or pieces available, support those artists. Go to see their show be more active with art community, since the only way we can keep the art alive is by supporting it.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
We definitely are living in an age of changes, its very interesting how this technology is moving so quickly in the last few years, I think art is evolving with the changes of the world, it comes from the imagination then materializes and now its moving to a fictional universe.
NFTs are something that definitely catch my attention, I always wanted to do a virtual exhibition and selling my images in a digital format sounds amazing and I would definitely be very interested in transforming my collection of artwork into the metaverse.
