We recently connected with Ece Muniroglu and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ece, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
This is an excellent question that can be applied to many aspects of life beyond just one’s career, such as relationships, social life, and personal interests. In retrospect, however, I believe that the present moment is always the right time to pursue our passions, as it is the culmination of our past experiences that have equipped us with the wisdom we possess today.
My musical journey began at the age of seven when I was introduced to the piano by my dad. I was mesmerized by music at that time, and it grew inside me, becoming a passion that has driven me ever since. My first degree is surprisingly in architecture from well-renowned Istanbul Technical University, since I had an interest in designing as well. Yet, despite my accomplishments in the field, I eventually decided to follow my heart and I embarked on a new journey to pursue my true passion for music at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. This experience prepared me for the long journey that lay ahead of me when I moved to Los Angeles in 2017, where I continue to thrive in the music industry.
While there are certainly moments in my past where I may question my decisions or actions, I am confident that I always did my best with the knowledge and experience that I had at the time. Ultimately, I believe that the present moment is the ideal time to take action and pursue one’s dreams, with the benefit of hindsight and experience to guide us forward.
Ece, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Thank you for allowing me to introduce myself! I am a composer and performer based in Los Angeles. I have been creating scores for film, television, and video games, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have a career that allows me to give voice to stories through my music.
Throughout my career, I have worked on a wide range of projects, from dramas and thrillers to animated TV series. My music has received critical acclaim and has helped bring several award-winning short films to life. I have also had the pleasure of collaborating with international composers, directors, and artists, which has broadened my creative horizons.
Some of my project highlights include composing music for 52 episodes of the animated children’s show “Fafa”, “A Deadly View,” co-scored with Emir Isilay, and Hey Alexa (Starring Stevie Lynn Jones, written and produced by Xochi Blymyer). My score for Hey Alexa won the Best Soundtrack Award at the New York International Film Festival and an Honorable Mention Award at the Red Movie Awards. I have also written additional music for several Lifetime movies, such as Killer Profile, Secrets on Campus, A Dangerous Defense, and many more. I am currently co-scoring an upcoming 39 episodes of an early childhood animated series with Emir Isilay.
In addition to my work as a composer, I have also had the privilege and honor of assisting award-winning composers such as Pinar Toprak and Alex Geringas. This has allowed me to learn from some of the best in the industry and expand my skillset even further, and I am very grateful for the opportunities they have afforded me to grow as a composer.
Overall, I am passionate about using music to tell stories and bring emotions to life. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with talented artists and storytellers to create unforgettable musical experiences.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As a creative, I believe that one of the most challenging things for non-creatives to understand is the unpredictable nature of our journey. Creativity is often an ocean of unknowns, full of ups and downs, and unexpected twists and turns. While this can be very exciting and rewarding, it can also be a scary experience at times. It’s a feeling that is common among many creative people, but can be difficult to understand unless you’ve lived it yourself.
Personally, I didn’t fully understand what to expect until I found myself immersed in the world of creativity. It’s an experience that requires a lot of patience, persistence, and the ability to adapt to change. While it can be challenging, it’s also incredibly fulfilling to be able to create something new and unique, and to bring your vision to life.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I once had a project that I was really passionate about, but I had no idea how to finish it in time. I was still new to the industry and didn’t have much experience, which made the task seem overwhelming. It honestly felt like a nightmare, and I thought there was no way I could deliver it on time.
Despite feeling stuck, I refused to give up. I remained committed to finishing the project and delivering the best possible outcome, and I reminded myself that I needed to trust the process. So, I kept moving forward, taking small steps and making progress whenever possible. I eventually completed the project, both my clients and I were happy with the outcome!
That experience taught me the importance of perseverance and resilience. It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t go as planned, but it’s important to keep pushing forward, even when it seems impossible. I learned that with passion, patience, and hard work, anything is possible!
