Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Earning a full-time living from creative work at Whitson Wonder Productions has been a journey filled with determination, learning, and growth. While it wasn’t an overnight success, my progress has been marked by significant steps and milestones that have propelled us forward.
In the early days, Whitson Wonder Productions started as a passion project for me in the basement of our home in 2018. At that time, it was a part-time endeavor, supplemented by other sources of income. However, as my dedication to my craft and commitment to community engagement became evident, the demand for WWP grew steadily.
One of the major milestones was the move from operating out of my home to a dedicated storage facility in 2019. This transition allowed me to increase our capacity, take on more clients, and elevate the quality of our work. It was a pivotal moment that demonstrated the potential for Whitson Wonder Productions to become a full-time endeavor.
In 2020, the establishment of our own location was another significant step forward. This move not only provided a permanent space for our operations but also served as a symbol of our dedication to professionalism and growth. With a physical location, we were able to expand the reach of WWP and offer more comprehensive services to our clients.
Throughout this journey, there were challenges and obstacles to overcome. Building a sustainable business in the creative industry requires patience, perseverance, and adaptability. I’ve learned to navigate fluctuations in demand, manage finances effectively, and continually innovate to stay ahead of the curve.
Looking back, there are certainly aspects of the process that could have been expedited with the benefit of hindsight. For example, investing more in marketing and networking early on could have accelerated our growth trajectory. Additionally, seeking mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals in the industry in the beginning could have provided valuable insights and shortcuts to success.
Nevertheless, every step of the journey has been a learning experience, shaping us into the company we are today. As we continue to evolve and expand our reach, we remain committed to our mission of using event design as a catalyst for positive change, and we are grateful for the opportunity to earn a living doing what we love.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
At Whitson Wonder Productions, we’ve encountered our fair share of challenges, one of which occurred when our primary venue unexpectedly shut down. This forced us to pivot our business strategy and explore new opportunities. However, adversity often breeds innovation, and this setback ultimately paved the way for remarkable growth and achievement.
Despite the initial hurdles, we persevered and seized the opportunity to collaborate with the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce, along with various corporations and nonprofits. Through these partnerships, we’ve been able to showcase our expertise in event planning and production, delivering exceptional experiences that exceed expectations.
Our work with the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce has been particularly rewarding, as we’ve had the privilege of supporting their mission to empower and uplift Black entrepreneurs and businesses in our community. By providing our event planning services, we’ve helped them host successful networking events, conferences, and galas that foster collaboration and economic growth.
Additionally, our collaborations with corporations and nonprofits have allowed us to make a meaningful impact in various sectors, from healthcare and education to social services and environmental advocacy. Whether it’s organizing fundraising events, corporate retreats, or community outreach programs, we take pride in our ability to tailor our services to meet the unique needs and objectives of each client.
