Ebony, appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?

Currently, I am the owner of Skin Glam Esthetics where I provide makeup, as well as facials and waxing services as a student esthetician. I previously was under the name of Ebony Beauty Beats, but more recently, I have rebranded to have all beauty services under one umbrella. I ultimately wanted to incorporate a new name and seamless aesthetic for my brand. I have invested a lot of time and money into my craft by also conducting my own market research, reaching out to other artists, taking marketing classes, and improving my social media presence.

Years prior, when I initially began doing my own makeup, my younger sister would ask me to do her makeup for her dance shows. After several times of doing her makeup, I soon realized that I had thoroughly enjoyed it and eventually took classes to improve my makeup skills. I took a brief pause on pursuing makeup, but the passion was still there so I came back full force promoting my business to seek clients. Since then, I have had opportunities to do makeup on so many women from all walks of life.

Fast forward to March 2022, I signed up and started Esthetics school. Prior to school, I began prioritizing my self care and facials were apart of my regime. I soon realized I wanted to add esthetic services to my current business. I essentially want to be one stop shop for facials, waxing, and makeup. I have revamped my business website, headshots, booking site, logo, etc., to ensure my business is up to par not only for my liking, but for current and future clients.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

My name is Ebony Tillery. I was born and raised in Washington, D.C. I currently am a makeup artist and student esthetician with an expected graduation October 2022. My brand name is Skin Glam Esthetics. I currently travel to and from clients for makeup services and soon will be offering services at a physical location. As of right now, I provide makeup, facial, and waxing services on men and women. I provide exceptional makeup and esthetic services where I pride myself in making my clients feel relaxed and boost their confidence through beauty services. I enhance my client’s appearance with makeup, customized facials, and hair removal. I truly believe my willingness to travel to and from clients sets me apart along with my attention to detail and calm demeanor allows me to connect with and retain returning clients. Additionally, I am the owner of a cosmetic brand, Beauty Created Perfectly where I sell lashes, lash tools, lipglosses, and merchandise. The ability to provide makeup services, as well as, provide quality cosmetics to my clients before and after their apart also sets me apart.

I want future clients to know that I understand that each client’s needs are different where the type of makeup they prefer or the type of products they’ll need during their facial and I will always provide exceptional service to ensure customer satisfaction. I take pride in provide amazing customer service from the moment they visit my website until the moment they leave my chair. Skin Glam Esthetics is the way to go!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

In addition to being an entrepreneur, I also have a full-time job in the investigation field. I love my career as I worked hard to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Masters in Homeland Security. I’ve had to learn how balance my full-time passion and my makeup and esthetic passion simultaneously. I have found ways to perform my required job duties at work and come home to perfect my business all while ensuring I don’t allow my “thoughts” diminish the quality of my work. Luckily, I have an alternative work schedule, which allows me to handle business related duties for Skin Glam Esthetics and Beauty Created Perfectly (i.e., website updates, social media content, reviewing bookings, running analytics, shipping orders, etc). I am also almost to the finish line of my esthetics program so I also have had to learn to navigate and allot time to study and get my proper rest for work, school, and business.

Although some days are long, the reward of knowing I am living in my purpose makes it worthwhile.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Currently, word of mouth and social media have been a great source of new clients and customers for Skin Glam Esthetics and Beauty Created Perfectly. I am able to connect with new clients via word of mouth and create content on social media to connect with future and existing clients and customers.
