Ebony, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
For about 10 years or so, I taught music lessons, specifically sining lessons, part-time. I was a full time educator and mother. It was extremely tough to manage both. The goal was to scale my music school so I could quit my full time job, but that never really happened until Covid. I just didn’t have the time to dedicate it the growth I needed. I needed time to build sales and marketing strategies. I needed money to pay people to do it well. Ironically, when covid 19 rocked our world and forced me to work from home, I took the opportunity to adjust my strategy to virtually learning. I saved 6 month’s of income but wasn’t quite ready to. quit completely. When I went back to work during the first week, I got covid. I struggled with symptoms and had to use disability. My struggle was the catalyst to take a leap of faith and quit my job. I read books, I watched seminars, I asked questions, I failed but never quit. Ultimately, I got a successful business coach, mastered SEO and almost tripled my income with in 12 months. We’re far from where I want to be but not where I used to be!

Ebony Sowell-Franklin Sets out to Launch a Non-Profit Music Training Project for the underserved in Atlanta Georgia.
Ebony Sowell-Franklin the founder of My Best Music Academy, a subsidiary of My Best Voice is pleased to announce the launch of “My Best Music Project” coming in the summer of 2023, in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.
The project is aimed at funding and supporting underserved, but deserving communities, enabling them to gain access to premium music training.
Having identified the need for access to music training, Ebony Sowell-Franklin, with her own story, educational background went forward to establish premium music training, especially for underserved communities.
Ebony Sowell-Franklin’s, Academy was birthed during the 2020 pandemic as a subsidiary to My Best Voice (established in 2009) and has led Atlanta’s private music lessons ever since.
“My Best Music Academy” teaches private lessons and classes to students ages 4 and above. My Best Music Academy has the highest quality of music lessons in the Metro Atlanta Area, drawing from the experience of the most qualified music instructors who represent degrees and experience from all around the United States, Asia, Russia, South Africa, and many other places.
The Academy teaches over 8 instruments including piano, violin, voice, guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, cello, and more.
My Best Music Academy is open for in-person, online, and in-home lessons, seven days a week and offers a flexible schedule to accommodate learners of all categories including homeschoolers, retirees, college students, and working professionals.
There are also group programs available to help build social skills through music.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Recently, we partnered with a major record label to find performers for a global girl group. We only had two weeks to promote. I really wanted to establish a good. relationship. So, I had to think of something to get people registered for the audition. Normally, we would use email/text marketing to our community. This time, we decided-to market to the local casting sites. We also did a count down to the day of the audition on social media. We expected 20 people, but we ended up having or 200 people audition! It was a risk, but we ended up over delivering.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A major lesson that I’ve learned about building business is it is not about shear hard work. I worked harder having two and three jobs. Hard work is definitely a factor, but more importantly, it’s about vision, strategy and faith. Accepting the failures, learning and pivoting quickly is key. If you work hard without vision, strategy and faith the odds are against you!
