We were lucky to catch up with Ebony Primadonna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ebony, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
My first time on stage in front of a live audience was at the country music awards on 2006 for Brooks & Dunn. The feeling that I had on that stage was incredible, and I said to myself this is the beginning of my journey as a recording artist. After I received my first Sag check my mind was blown at how much I made singing background for a major artist. I remember it like yesterday.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began as a songwriter with BMI since the age of 16, I grew up in the studio as a teenager. My roots started in the youth church choir of New Bethel Baptist Church. From there is was classically trained in gospel ,opera, and rhythm and blues. I provide my audience a way of escape through musical storytelling. What sets me apart from others is that I have the ability to be thrown in the pit of life’s trials and because of the strength that God has give to me , like a phoenix I always rise. I am most proud of the fact that i released my own EP on my own terms and with courage, faith and trust in God and yourself , you can do anything as long as you believe in you! I am the Caribbean princess from Trinidad and I wear my crown proudly.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think non creatives sometimes struggle with believing that musicians go through tremendous emotional distress. We fight with ourselves to make sure that our craft is as close to perfection as possible and that can sometimes be our biggest challenge.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish there were more grants available to artists who want to go the independent route.
