We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful EBONY MCMILLAN. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with EBONY below.
Alright, EBONY thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story behind the mission of my business is that every woman deserves to look good. I want women from all walks of life to be able to afford to look good. I want women of all shapes and sizes to be able to make a statement as they meet the world every day. Before we speak, we introduce ourselves to the world by what we have on. At MoreThanRagz I want the world to know our customers are going to show up unapologetically themselves, bold, and fierce. Therefore, the clothes are more than just rags. The clothes are a statement. I try to find items that will uplift, stand out, and compliment customers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Greetings more than friends, I am Ebony McMillan the co -author of The Brown Girl Guidebooks: Start with Self-Love book and journal. I am also the owner of Morethanragz women’s online boutique. I am from Augusta, Ga but reside in Charlotte, NC. Employment with the local sheriff’s office started my journey in North Carolina. As time went on, I felt I was not living out my purpose and in the shadows of others. Therefore, I changed careers and continued my education. My undergraduate is in Criminal Justice from Troy University and my graduate degree is in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. As I started my self- love journey there were a lot of ups and downs. I had to deal with child- hood trauma, abandonment issues, and owning who I am. I love bold colors and items that make a statement. Most of the items within my clothing line, Morethanragz are bold colors and make a statement. My clothing line is for women of all shapes and sizes. I carry from small to a 4x in most items. I try to solve the problem for customers that may feel they cannot afford what they really want to wear. My items are priced reasonable and are stylish. I am most proud of myself for not giving up, doing what my heart desires and keeping God first. I want potential clients to know they are more than and to never let anyone make you feel like you are less than. Two of the most important things you have is self- love and confidence.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Before Covid, I had to file bankruptcy. My finances were in shambles, and I was on the verge of losing my home. This obstacle placed Morethanragz on the backburner until 2023. I have always loved clothes and fashion. However, I could not make Morethanragz a reality until I was able to manage my finances and take control of my life. I had to learn how to say no, set healthy boundaries, stop people pleasing.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I became a mom, I was a probation officer. I was burned out and wanted to spend more time with my son. I made the decision to leave probation after several years. Law enforcement is a very demanding profession and requires resilience. I had lost my why. I was not happy, under paid, and wanted a new direction. My life was craving for something else.
