We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ebony Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ebony below.
Ebony, appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
To start, I knew I wanted to start a business. I didn’t know what that business would consist of, so when I first got the idea I wanted to start my candle business, I was in the tub with the candle lit my mom brought me for my birthday, listening to music. After being in the tub for a minute, I realized that it was relaxing and that I enjoyed it, and I knew that many people would feel the same way, especially if you had a long day and wanted to come home and relax. Once I concluded that I wanted to start a candle business, I researched candles and what comes with candle making. It took me a year to launch fully. I made a checklist of what I needed to do to launch my business; I started by learning how to make a candle which took longer than I aspected. Finding out my business name, I figured out my packaging and how I wanted my brand to be represented. Once I got my website together, I knew it was time to fully get into business mode and see what the journey had aligned for me. After launching, I felt a sense of accomplishment because I found something I had worked hard on.
Ebony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ebony Jones, Im from Akron, Ohio. I launched my business on December 11, 2020, almost going on for three years. The name of my company is Glam Scents, and I hand-make all my products. The products I sell are candles, wax melts, foam hand soap, room spray, and customized candles. It took me a while to figure out what direction to take when starting my business; I just knew I wanted to start a business. It was a time when I felt overwhelmed and stressed out from school and work and wanted to decompress somehow. So I lit a candle, played music, and relaxed in the tub. Right then, I realized how that made me feel, and I instantly thought that if I could create a product that could hopefully get someone to feel the same I did and find a safe place to relax and enjoy the time they are spending with themselves, rather it’s in the tub, their car or their backyard. Im big on energy, and sometimes you have to create some good vibes and energy around you, so why not light a candle or melt some wax melts with incredible aromas with some music? You can have a chance to relax physically or mentally, and we all need time to relax with ourselves. Being authentic and accurate regarding my business sets me apart from others. A lot of people ask me why I started my business, and when I tell them why it is because people be stressed out, and around the wrong energy, so I created something that can help you with shifting that energy by lighting a candle or spraying the room spray to brighten up your mood in any way possible. The first thing you do is smell something and say it smells good, which comes with a smile, so it’s like I got you halfway there to put you in a better mood without you knowing, lol. I’m most proud of not giving up on myself and my business when I felt things weren’t going as planned. The journey of running a business is not for the weak because sometimes it takes over you as a person, and your business is all you know, which consumes so much of your time. So when you plan for something to happen, and it fails, it hits harder because you automatically think of failure, but in reality, that’s part of the game. You have your highs and lows, but as long as you continue to strive and never give up on yourself, you are on the right path. Something I want my customers to know about me and my brand is that it comes from the heart and that anything from Glam Scents will always be packaged with love and good energy that will brighten your day.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was trying to make everything I had so “perfect” regarding anything I did with my business. Trying to make everything perfect hindered my business because I always felt that everything I posted on my social media was not good enough, so I wouldn’t post at all. It would take me hours to create one post on my social media, where I would give up and not post anything. It came to a point where I realized that whatever I post, whether good or bad to me, only I feel any way about whatever I post. People were still going to my website and purchasing my products, so they didn’t think that way, so why was I? So I knew I had to get out of my head because it wouldn’t help me grow. Once I gained confidence about what I was doing and got over that everything didn’t have to be perfect, it became easy for me to think and be proud of whatever I posted on
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I use to grow more customers is to give away samples of my products. I will put them in the orders or hand out samples and educate and promote my products and my business. I did that to showcase the best-selling products to my new potential customers, give them a business card, and connect with hopefully a new customer. I always say scared money doesn’t make money, so you must spend it to make it, but sometimes you won’t make anything because it’s a part of some strategy that must help you in the long run. It may not look like you are making money, but you can gain a relationship with a potential customer by doing so. I genuinely believe that the person behind the brands plays a lot in acquiring customers because I feel like they would support a business with a good leader behind everything.
