We were lucky to catch up with Ebonie Thornton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Ebonie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?

The most innovative thing I’ve done in this career is create my signature wax melt truffles, it’s so hard to stand out in the candle industry without copying and looking like every other business. My signature wax melt truffles look like luxury truffle candies, not edible but highly scented and luxurious.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

My name is Ebonie I am the creator/owner of Luxurious Ambience. Luxurious Ambience is a luxury, handmade candle company that is crafted and hand poured with love and designed to go with any home aesthetic. I offer a wide range of scents in my candles, wax melt truffles and room and linen mist.
We are committed to being Eco Chic-Luxe and we source ethically sustainable materials, reusable and biodegradable!

I am a military wife and mama of two boys, and I strive everyday to be best at all these many hats I wear! I work hard on Luxurious Ambience not only because it’s my passion, but to show my boys with hard work and dedication that mama can reach her dreams.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

My husband is in the military! A lot of people don’t know as a military spouse it’s really hard to find work. I know very surprising right? But it’s true so many military families are struggling to stay afloat because of moving from place to place. I decided to be a entrepreneur because of the flexibility to take my job where ever we go! Having Luxurious Ambience is just more then just making and selling candles it provides stability to help provide for my family where ever the military takes us.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

My candle business is my pivot. I am also a licensed esthetician and part time creator. We know black creators don’t have the same opportunity as others so I do it part time because it doesn’t provide stability but I love it!

I had a successful makeup and esthetic business and when we moved I knew I had to rebuild my clientele, I was also pregnant so it wasn’t as easy to build like I thought. That’s when my husband suggested I should make candles because I was always buying them, candles relax me and put me in a zen. So I started doing my research and in 1 year I was ready to start my candle business. I’m so glad I did because I have the best and loyal customers luxurious ambience wouldn’t be where it is with out our amazing customers, I’m so grateful for that.
