We were lucky to catch up with Eboni January recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Eboni thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
There was a defining moment during my OB/GYN residency that changed my purpose forever. I had a young patient, barely 20 years old, who came in with severe complications during labor. Despite her cries for help and visible signs of distress, the medical team initially brushed it off as exaggeration. I fought to get her the care she deserved, and thankfully, we saved both her and her baby, but just barely. That moment burned into my soul: we are failing women, especially Black women, during the most vulnerable times of their lives. I knew then I wasn’t just here to practice medicine. I was here to change the system. That was the birth of what would become the Empowered Motherhood movement.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Dr. Eboni January, an OB/GYN, health strategist, and founder of the 1 million mothers movement. I’m also a speaker, author of Empowered Motherhood and Educational Athlete, media contributor, and fierce advocate for health equity. I entered this field not just to deliver babies, but to deliver solutions to the crises facing health in diverse communities across the country.
Through DoctorEJ.com, I offer a suite of services that span clinical expertise, corporate wellness, patient education, and community engagement. I partner with hospitals and health organizations to provide culturally competent care solutions—from provider training to postpartum wellness programs and digital health products.
I also serve as the Executive Producer and Host of “Doctor EJ: Intimate Conversations”—a media platform giving voice to topics often silenced, including fertility, chronic disease, birth trauma, and bias in medicine.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just diagnose problems—I design systems that dismantle them.
I’m most proud of the 1 Million Mothers Campaign, a national movement aimed at saving lives, building trust, and amplifying real solutions for women, especially those most overlooked. From national book tours to birth equity summits and digital curriculum for patients and providers, I’m creating a legacy that reimagines what maternal care can look like in America.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Absolutely. Early in my career, I applied for a prestigious fellowship and was told behind closed doors that I was “too passionate” and “too focused on community work.” In short, they saw my advocacy as a distraction. Instead of silencing my voice, I created my lane. I used rejection as redirection. That’s how DoctorEJ.com was born. I poured my vision into building my programs, curricula, and platforms, impacting more people than I ever could have through a traditional academic path. Resilience for me wasn’t about bouncing back—it was about building something better in the ashes.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Authenticity and outcomes. My patients, clients, and partners know that I bring both medical authority and cultural fluency to every conversation. Whether I’m in a hospital boardroom or speaking on national TV, I’m grounded in real solutions backed by science and empathy. I also believe in showing up consistently, not just in emergencies. I’ve built my reputation by being visible, credible, and unapologetically passionate about changing maternal outcomes. That commitment speaks louder than any marketing campaign.
