We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eboney Merriman . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eboney below.
Hi Eboney , thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I always struggled with this question my whole life. I was never really asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, so I never thought of it. That is until I found my passion in art. As I was still finding myself as a creative, I love to record songs in music, paint on clothes, do makeup and CREAT as a whole. So I never knew what box to put myself in. So when deciding to go to college, sure, I could major in Art, but then what? How far would spending all that money and time get me? As an artist, you don’t really NEED a degree. You just need the craft and passion (not to mention opportunities). But the “Struggling Artist ” is real. I have a full time job that only requires me to work 3 days a week, so I am blessed to have 4 days a week to focus on whatever it is I’m working on. Whether that be myself or art
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know, I’m from the Bay area (Vallejo, Ca) and I am a stage 4 Ovarian cancer survivor . I discovered my talents in high school while taking art class, but fell into its passion while undergoing chemo for three years while under treatment. I moved to LA after winning the fight, and went to school for TV/Film & speacial effects makeup, where I had the opportunity to work on small set’s for music videos, fashion shows and photography. I spealize in custom acrylic art pieces (IF YOU WANT IT. CAN PAINT IT.) but I find joy in body painting at events. I really don’t like to limit myself to what can be done. Close mouths don’t get fed, so just give me some ideas and I can help put the vision together.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Absolutely!! I was sheltered growing up, so I didn’t know that a school for the music and arts even existed.
Or that I was thos good at what I do.
If I knew back then what I know now, inwould have used more resources and taken my craft more serious, earlier in life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is freedom. To express whatever it is I am thinking, feeling or just wanting to express in general without having to use my words. Even if the meaning has no meaning at all.
