We were lucky to catch up with Eboné Almon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eboné, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The PHG (Professional Homegirl) Podcast was created after my Na-Na transitioned in March 2016. Discussions surrounding mental health were not as popular as they are today and I decided that if I wanted to survive my depression, therapy was my only option. During my healing journey, I wanted to share the tools that I learned in therapy with other women that might not have access to these resources. In addition, I noticed that there wasn’t a platform for women of color where they can live in their authenticity and fully be seen. Since 2019, The PHG Podcast’s mission has been to amplify the voices of women of color. I wanted to normalize conversations within my community to humanize women, especially Black women, that took roads less traveled.
Eboné, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an entrepreneur with a passion for storytelling that has inspired me to create The Professional Homegirl, a place where women of color don’t have to look far to see themselves. I’ve met so many women who shared their stories with me about how they overcame some of the hardest challenges on their journey, which fueled a fire and ignited me to provide a space where passion, knowledge, and experiences can exist all in one.
The PHG Podcast™ is an informative podcast that interviews women anonymously who have survived addictions, overcame generational curses, and a multitude of life lessons. This podcast aims to show the full range of women of color living the full lives that they have worked to have.
In addition, I wanted to create a coloring book that infuses art, storytelling, and technology into one. The Professional Homegirl Coloring Book is an interactive self-help coloring book that provides beautiful and relatable illustrations featuring quotes and games that reflect lifestyles that are similar to the women I interviewed. Plus, customers will be able to listen to stories from The PHG Podcast that matches illustrations from The Professional Homegirl Coloring Book.
The one thing that I am most proud of is how The Professional Homegirl became a place where women don’t have to look far to see themselves. I have interviewed over two hundred women and each story resonated with me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. I hope that when listeners hear these stories it will encourage them to share their own stories with other Professional Homegirls. You never know how your storyline can be the next Professional Homegirl’s lifeline.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The most important lesson that I had to unlearn is that my support will not come from my family and friends and that’s okay. Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice to have their support from the beginning but if it’s not organic, I don’t want it. I believed in The Professional Homegirl since day one because it was birthed from a vulnerable place within me. I truly believe that vulnerability is the heart of building community and because of this, I was able to connect with Professional Homegirls around the world.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
If I’m being honest, my whole life has shown me that there is nothing that I can’t survive. I found my purpose through my pain and used my pain as my power to create a platform that is considered to be a roadmap for Black women. I hope that PHG is a reminder that tough times don’t last but Professional Homegirls do.
