We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ebon Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ebon below.
Alright, Ebon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned the craft by taking a chance on myself. There were a lot of things that I took liberty with. I knew when I was auditioning for roles, they were simple and very stereotypical. I wanted to change that. I made it a goal of mine to write something that was suitable for me. Doing that has opened up a world of possibilities for me. Not only have I written and acted in things that I have written, I have also written and produced original content for other actors. I can’t tell you how much enjoyment I get from that.

Ebon , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I will say that I am someone who stumbled into the creative world. I think we all have the creative gene but only a few of us only listen to it. I was introduced to acting later than a lot of my contemporaries. I started off doing theater and I couldn’t stop. It was community theater but it was still the best feeling ever for me. I ended up doing ten shows in two years. I moved on from doing to theater to film. Doesn’t seem like a hard transition but it was initially. I was also interested in writing so I got into that and began to write like a mad man. One of the proudest achievements for me is writing, producing, and acting in my very first script that I wrote. Also to everyone reading this, I have other scripts that are in development at the moment.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
At this moment, the mission that drives me as a creative is representing black males in this country in a positive light. We have to normalize being black in America. Black males in America have been typecast and I want to change that narrative.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Freedom. You get to be yourself and create something that the world has never seen before. There is power in that.
