Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Earl Musick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Earl thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I was very blessed to have known some of the most successful cartoonists, writers, and comedians in the business. Many famous cartoonists such as, Charles Schulz ( Peanuts), Mad magazine artists, successful TV sitcom writers and famous comedians who have traveled the world. I have been told by my mentors that if you want to be your best study the ways your heroes go about their career. As an artist study the way your hero draws, the techniques, the time that they put into what they do and then BE YOU. Create your own drawing style. Your own writing style and put in the time. The biggest obstacles in creativity is allowing small things that don’t really matter take up your mind and time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a cartoonist, comedy writer, speaker, and a comedian. I feel that each one of these careers alone could be a separate career, but I feel that they play very nicely together. I love creating work that will hopefully make people laugh when they read it in greeting cards, magazines, books, or see it on TV. I really love performing in front of a live audience. Speaking to people from all over the country and trying to give them a laugh to brighten their day is a wonderful feeling. There are times were I spend several days on the road and then there are times where I sit at the drawing table for days. I think it helps to keep your mind always open for new opportunities. I am always looking for new ways to help people laugh.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is a powerful tool in almost every career today. Please use it for good. There are so many posts on social media that really do nothing but harm and there are many that are meant to brighten your day. Be the posts that encourage and give positive thoughts to those who follow you. Post often and post encouraging things. You will probably be surprised of those who reach out and want to work with you when you speak of things that encourage others.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love to hear the laughter. I love to see the smiles. I love to receive emails and letters telling me that they enjoy my work and I some how brightened their day.
