We caught up with the brilliant and insightful E J Carr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi E J, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I lived in the West of Ireland in the mid 2000’s with my family. We made a change in scenery, in a sense, to regroup personally and professionally. I was taken by the people and the landscape and the sea, as they all have character and texture.
Early on in our life there, I decided I wanted to shoot a series of images of the men of West Cork, Ireland. I saw a black and white collection of images that I would eventually show in a gallery.
I invited a particular man to come by my home studio and let me do a few shots to start the project. He was a particularly rugged looking person with a great spirit and the shoot went well. I edited the shoot and chose a favorite image and spent time experimeting with treatments and color grading in Photoshop and came to a final that I liked. I made a print and hung it on the wall and looked at it for a week or more. Everyday, I looked at it waiting for the internal signal to begin the process of searching out subjects.
One morning a came up to the studio and it hit me square in the face. The image of the man on the wall is the image of what I would have thought King Arthur would have looked like.
E J, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
This link is a throwback that shares my early experience.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Relationships in business are so important. Keeping the realtionship vibrant and honest is key. Because of that, clients, friends, aquaitances will mention your name, your brand. So, in my opinion, word has always been the source of new clients for me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’ve always been driven to find beauty in everything I photograph. So for me the goal as been “find the beauty in everything” That said,….I’ve struggled to stay true to one path as you can see, that search can go in many directions in regard to a specialty. Now, at the point I am in my career, staying relevant as a creator is a driving force. I still look for the next beautiful, unusual image.
