We were lucky to catch up with Dzhuliya Servetnik recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dzhuliya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
As a young child, I have had many visits to the dentist. I remember how anxious I was during those visits when I had to fix my cavities and keep my mouth open for what seemed like a lifetime. One of the reasons I chose to specialize in pediatric dentistry is because I could relate to being a young anxious kid at the dentist. I knew I wanted to help kids make their dental visits as pleasant and stress free as possible. Now as a pediatric dentist I get to do that every day. Some of the most memorable moments for me are when my young patients surprise themselves with how well they handled their treatment. Many kids come in thinking there’s no way they can get through a procedure because their last visit was horrible. It takes a lot of time and patience to make a trusting connection with them. There’s a lot of explaining and stop-and-go. All of it is worth it when the child smiles from ear to ear and gives you the biggest hug because you helped them conquer their fears. Now they have confidence to handle tough experiences not just at the dentist but hopefully in their everyday life. That, for me, is what pediatric dentistry is about.
Dzhuliya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always imagined my job would be helping others and improving people’s lives. As wonderful as dentistry can be, it’s also a quite challenging career especially when the first thing you hear is “I hate the dentist”. I’m sure many dentists including myself have heard this phrase before. In fact, I probably said that myself when I was younger. Growing up, I have been in the dental chair as a patient many times. As brave as I tried to be it was still very stressful and most definitely unpleasant. As I got older, I was looking for a career that would allow me to connect with people and improve their lives. With this thought, I decided to pursue my career in dentistry and further specialize in pediatric dentistry. I think working with kids is a greater challenge with a greater reward. As a pediatric dentist, my goal is to provide a positive dental experience and set the stage for oral health awareness. Since my husband is also a pediatric dentist who shares my passion, I knew we could accomplish this best if we built our own office. At Cavity Patrol Pediatric Dentistry, we always strive to provide a nurturing and positive environment to take care of all children’s dental needs. We specialize in a wide range of procedures such as oral conscious sedations, general anesthesia, special needs, lip and tongue ties, cleanings and exams. We recognize that every child is unique in their own way. Therefore, we always try to make a deeper connection in order to provide more personalized care. We like to see our patients get past their dental fears and tell us how much they love going to the dentist!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think it’s very crucial to have a good partner. There are a lot of challenging moments when you run a business and it can get very overwhelming. I like to think that my husband, Dr. Chun Yin Wong , and I work very well together as a team. We both try to do whatever we’re best at to complement the other persons talents. For example, he loves math and therefore, he takes care of the numbers part of the business and likes to talk about scientific details with the parents. And I, on the other hand, am more artistic and like to focus on esthetic dentistry. Ultimately, we try to maintain constant communication and provide support to one another.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Our most important philosophy is to treat each family as if it was our own family. We always strive to be empathetic to our patients and provide the best quality work. I think our patients can feel the difference when they come to our office. We want them to know that they are in a safe place surrounded by people who care about their wellbeing.
