We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DyShala Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DyShala below.
DyShala, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Growing up i wanted to be a nurse or doctor. As i navigated through my high school and college years i still tried to find a passion in the health care field but i wasn’t fulfilled. In my mid 20s I began to watch Instagram, Facebook and YouTube influencers do makeup. I began practicing on myself which looking back was horrible lol. As time went by of course i got better. I began practicing on my friends and family. I was a beast at brows and everyone wanted me to do their brows. I began taking online makeup classes to perfect my craft. In 2020 is when i realized makeup was a passion for me. I began taking more clients and i was unhappy at my current 9-5. October 2020 i just kept hearing “LET GO” but i was scared. I was so used to a guaranteed paycheck every two weeks but it was time to take my passion and turn it into profit. Now let’s go back a few months in August 2020 i opened my LLC ShaLuxe Cosmetics where i sold lashes & lipgloss. I felt that would be a great addition to my makeup services. I began doing more research on how to maintain a business. Learning about business credit as well and still learning. Now back to October 2020 I quit my 9-5 and took the leap of faith. At the time i was working out of my home. I then enrolled in esthetician school (SEEI) in March 2021 and graduated in August 2021. I had to learn that you have to do it scared and just trust in God. Have faith the size of a mustard seed. After graduating i then was able to secure a location in September 2021. Best decision ever. My goal is to become 100% travel.. I plan to own a bus where I travel to all my clients near or far to provide the makeup services needed on my bus which would be more convenient for many.
So to anyone that’s interested in starting a business the first thing i would say is to TRUST GOD & HAVE FAITH. Write down a plan and execute. Start small and work your way up. Everyone may not support but don’t get discouraged. You will have loyal clients and the better you get the better things will become. You also have to remember that nothing happens overnight. You have to work for it. Make sure to always make goals and work towards meeting those goals. You can do it!

DyShala, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Full-Time Makeup artist located in Sumter, SC. I offer natural glams & full glams with glitter and rhinestone. I also have makeup products available for sell (lashes, lipgloss, lipstick & lipliners). My main goal with my clients is to provide them great customer service and provide a flawless makeup look. Teaching makeup classes is something else i offer for the clients that want to learn on their own. What sets me apart from other makeup artist is my spirit & the vibe i provide when my clients come into my suite. What i am most proud of is the fact that i was featured in my hometown’s newspaper and my business is featured in our local Staples. For my potential clients / followers i want them to know I love what I do it’s not just a check for me i have a passion for this and i always make sure their is a 100% satisfaction before any client leaves.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve had ups and downs in my business and most business owners have. As a new makeup artist back in 2020-21 i would easily get discouraged or distracted by my peers that were in the same field as me. I would always wonder how they had such consistent clientele and how they got there. I remember going weeks without clients or 1-2 clients per week. What i did to combat the feeling of defeat was i found a few females that were interested in being my brand ambassadors. I would continuously practice on them and post consistently to show my audience other skills I’m capable of and that allowed me to bounce back from the feeling of defeat. I had to learn to be consistent.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Everyone is not going to support you. Whether it be family/ friends. I used to wonder why certain friends wouldn’t share my work. I would wonder why others would be getting a more consistent clientele. As i got deeper into my career i learned that those that matter will support and they will send others as well. I also learned that everybody isn’t for you. God will send those that will be just for you & your business.
