Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dyllan Stanczyk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dyllan, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I don’t know if I can nail it down to just one. I tend to do a lot of popculture related tattoos. I think with pop culture; or those who love to consume it, have a lot of positive nostalgia around certain characters. For me cartoons were a huge part of my childhood, and at times, an escape. That hasn’t really changed as an adult. I put it a lot of effort into my pieces to try and reactive the nostalgia with any given character. I want to try and tell a story utilizing images and colors. I love getting to share these moments with clients who hold their characters so close to heart.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Dyllan Stanczyk. I am thirty-one years old, and I am a licensed tattoo artist in Oregon.
I started tattooing in 2015, but my love for art goes back further than that.
I grew up with a mom and a grandma who really loved film. My mom worked a lot, so I spent a lot of time at my grandma’s.
My mom had a love for horror movies, and I remember always going to rent blockbuster films.
We would usually start with the first movie of a slasher franchise and go down the list, e.g., Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part Two, Part III, and yes, even Jason X.
It was at my grandma’s that I was introduced to Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman.
This helped transition me into the superhero genre; there wasn’t a lot at that time!
When I was old enough to start drawing, I discovered Lilo and Stitch and loved to draw the characters right off the screen. I always wanted to get them as accurately as I could to the characters I was seeing on screen. This, I believe, planted the seed for my interest in realism art.
I continued making art into high school and discovered color there. This is where I really practiced realism, painting, drawing, and sculpting.
Let’s fast forward.
I was 17 and in Missouri visiting my biological dad. I wanted to get a tattoo before I turned 18, and all I needed was parental consent over the phone. It may have been a little too easy. However, this really sparked my interest in the world of tattooing. Being greeted with that super strong whiff of green soap as I opened the door nervously,
I’ll remember it forever.
After leaving, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Making art on a stranger that will last a lifetime sounded so fun and so scary.
I graduated in 2012, and by 2014, I was taking the proper steps Oregon required to become a legitimate tattoo artist.
Ten years later, I have always tried to push myself and better my art with every new piece I take on. I have never wanted to stop learning, and I love it even more than the day I started.
My goal is to provide a clean, professional, and smooth experience with every piece I take on. I pride myself on hard work, and I want to make sure everyone who trusts me with their skin receives a custom, one-of-a-kind piece that they will take with them forever.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
To me, its sharing that time with my client who shares the same love for pop culture as I do.
I always love getting to know more characters and do the homework to learn as much as I can before starting the piece. Having to watch a film, series, or a video game play through on YouTube to learn details to help propel the piece and tell a story, is the challenge I love!

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I have not found a way to incorporate them into my business. I’ll admit, that technology does confuse the heck out of me.
However I have seen creatives use them in very interesting ways providing their supporters with unique perks and opportunities. This includes discount on merch, prints, maybe tattoo specials, etc.
I could see implementing something like this in the future.
