Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dylan Wheeler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dylan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve put a lot of effort and focus into risk-taking recently, and I have found tremendous success with it. By success, I mean mostly personally. I’ve really been able to prove to myself that I am capable and worth it. This has ranged from making costly purchases that have then paid off in dividends to auditioning for theater productions and on-camera roles (both of which I’ve done for the first time in the last year). Risks don’t always work out, but you never know until you try.
Dylan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I became a voice actor in 2019 and truly loved it. Since then I’ve narrated dozens of audiobooks, voiced characters in video games, been in films and TV shows, and performed on stage for the first time. Becoming another character and learning what makes someone very different from me tick, is always fascinating. I’m always learning something new about the craft or people. My absolute favorite thing is to help bring an author’s words to life in ways they never expected.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I was in middle school, I learned to play guitar. Not long after I decided that being a musician was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I even went to college specifically to play guitar better. Four years after graduating, I started to pursue acting and have been more successful quicker than when I was playing music regularly.
But I don’t regret a second of it, because, aside from all the people I’ve met through music (including my wife) everything I learned, every mistake I made has helped me in ways I never thought possible.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to collaborate with other artists and creatives and create. Creating is literal magic. The fact that humans have the ability to take information and ideas from entirely disconnected places, connect, and make something wholly unique always blows my mind.
I firmly believe the purpose of life and the purpose of humanity is to create. Create stories, create music, and create innovations in technology and medicine. It’s creation and artistry.
