We were lucky to catch up with Dylan Sanglay recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dylan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
Appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Risk taking has always been a huge part of my journey. I took the risk of starting my own business when I was 17 years old. That’s when I started my resell business, DSigner. I started the business by buying & selling thrifted clothing.
Then, I started getting into games, collectibles, sneakers, sports cards, and many more. With that said, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge throughout the years and now I can buy & sell everything. Now, I know how to check market value for all items, negotiate, and close deals daily.
Dylan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dylan Sanglay. A lot of people know me as @DSanglay, the Shoe Plug in Las Vegas. As I started my business only buying & selling thrifted clothing, I started to venture out into other items. I’ve always had a huge passion for sneakers, but was never able to get myself to purchase a $200+ pair of sneakers. I started gaining capital with my initial inventory & selling off my personal items. I bought my first pair of Yeezys for $280 when I was 18 years old. I was scared to make that investment, but it taught me a lot.
I ended up breaking even on that investment. I learned how to be a better negotiator, how to legit check sneakers, best places to buy & sell, how to ship, how to avoid getting scammed, and much more. I actually wrote my own book, “Sneakers Money Bank” that teaches any one of any age how to start making money selling sneakers. Now, instead of just being known as the “Sneaker Plug” I’m rebranding and marketing myself as the “Everything Plug.” I am now buying/selling EVERYTHING daily! At DSigner Stealz & Dealz, we buy/sell houses, cars, sneakers, clothing, collectibles, sports memorabilia, etc.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Growing your clientele takes time. I believe the #1 thing for me was GREAT & GENUINE customer service. I strive to build long term customers, not just one time customers. When I started my journey of reselling, I sold a majority of my inventory through Instagram.
I only took Zelle or ApplePay (Friends & Family Payment Methods) for payments because Instagram never gave the option for people to purchase with their credit/debit card or any other payment method for that matter. With that being said, this involved a lot of trust. I always preach OVER communication. It’s always better to over communicate and be quick with your responses. You want to be there with your customers every step of the way.
Sometimes, I’d even go out of my way to video chat with my customers, so they know it’s ME they are doing business with. Nowadays, you may never know who you are dealing with. Along my journey, there were many people that would act as if they were me and try to scam my customers out their hard earned money. Good thing, I was able to catch that early enough and stop it. Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
At the start of my entrepreneurial journey, I received lots of negative feedback. My family members, peers, & even close friends never used to care when I talked about my business, never had interest of supporting my business, or just wanted to hate on my business overall. Many didn’t believe I would be where I am today. With all of that being said, I knew I had a few things. I have God & HUGE faith in myself that I can achieve ANYTHING I put my mind to in this world through Him.
Being an entrepreneur is not as easy as everyone says it is. I’ve never wanted to work for anyone else. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. Now, instead of me working 9-5, I work 24/7. Every entrepreneur must have tough skin. I personally experience lots of anxiety, stress, negativity, doubt, loneliness, and many more.
But, all of these challenges are what make us better leaders overall. God put these challenges in front of us to build us up for everything we’ve ever prayed for. He is The Answer and He is The ONLY Way I have been able to obtain ALL of the Blessings I have in my life.
