We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dylan Paulini. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dylan below.
Dylan, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I mean it I’m sure it’s possible to learn it from scratch but I think that to some extent at least you have to have an instinct for it, you have to know what makes a shot look cool or beautiful in terms of the framing, hopefully you’ll have a good team that will help you make the shot look amazing but you just have to know how to keep someone entertained with each and every shot.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Dylan Paulini Pérez, I was born and raised in Mexico with a passion for film and at 18 yers old I came to Los Angeles, CA, to further develop that passion. I like to call myself a film director but those in the industry know that it’s pretty hard to make a living off of directing in your first stages of your career which I still consider myself to be in. So professionally I work as a chief lighting technician (non-union) but as a passion and in heart I’m a director!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think it’s being proud of what you created. Wether it’s you that’s been editing or someone else handling your post production, when you get to see the thing you and your team have been working endlessly to create on a big screen or just all together for the first time, it truly feels amazing, especially if you are proud of it.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I mean at the moment I don’t really have a social media presence, I think I have a little over a thousand followers but I’m also not really trying to grow in that area, I haven’t found the need to do so yet. All the work that I’m doing at the moment is to know what I can do, to learn and to become more knowledgable in my craft. I know that social media can be very important in peoples careers but I haven’t found I’m missing out. I guess if and when it grows I’ll know what I was missing out on!
And for people trying to build their social media presence, I think you just have to find out what people want to see and give them more of it. I’ve heard it’s like a full-time career having and maintaining a large audience on social media so get ready!
