Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dylan Overhouse. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dylan, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
A project that has meant a lot to me is “Cooking with Bao” and the similar work I have done with the nonprofit For Independent Hmong Farmers Corp. During the height of the covid-19 pandemic, my partner, a few friends and I successfully produced a local cooking show and fundraised thousands of dollars for La Crosse area Hmong farmers after learning of the unique struggles these local farmers had been facing. In our show we focused on spreading awareness of the challenges and needs Hmong farmers had been facing, while also connecting with the community by teaching guest hosts how to make delicious meals using simple and seasonal ingredients found at the farmers markets. This led to a total of 3 full season, and 30 episodes so far. It has been a very special and rewarding project rooted in community, and building bridges.
Dylan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am your everyday dude with a camera. I photograph local events, take portraits of families, and create beautiful images that represent cities I visit and work. The videos I produce end up on local commercials, give a visual life to your favorite songs, and document artistic ventures. Every photo I create and video I produce is shot with intention, honesty, and love. I have tried applying myself to other jobs, and nothing compares to the passion I have for working with cameras and documenting the world we live in.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I built my reputation by being reliable, thoughtful, and a go-getter. There isn’t a thing that I won’t try once, so especially in my formative years I was always saying yes to different jobs, whether I thought they were relevant to my path or not, and I would put 100% into everything I did. Artists I’ve worked with have acknowledged the thoughtfulness that I put into each photo before taking it, and the intention behind each video I produce. I think those things along with being someone people can always count on to come through go a long way in this industry. Many of the jobs I take are ones where you only get one shot, and they won’t happen again, so it’s important you always come through for clients.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Connecting with all sorts of different people, and all of the different experiences. My monkey brain needs to constantly be doing something, and the variety of different places that my creative ventures take me keeps me entertained and inspired. In any given week I may be filming behind the scenes at an award winning pie shop, touring a creamery that supplies the state with cheese curds, live streaming a Vietnam war veteran, and shooting a music video. Throughout this journey I get to connect with folks from all over, each with a unique story.
