We were lucky to catch up with Dylan Jakobsen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dylan, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Being an artist/creative, especially when you are doing it for a living, goes hand in hand the venerability of wearing your heart on your sleeve. I have always been passionate about music since starting at a young age, but especially in todays day & age with social media, it can take a serious mental toll. With the highest of highs there is also the lowest of lows. I think it’s in those times of negativity not only myself, but most people can tend to ask themselves what it would be like to work a regular job. I think what always pulls me back from that thought is knowing that music is what I have always been destined to do and it is something in the world that I could never live without. It’s an environment I thrive in whether its songwriting, studio sessions or out on tour performing the songs I wrote. Beyond thankful to say that I’ve managed to create and perform music full-time for a decade now!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in the Northwestern corner of the US – Snohomish Washington to be exact. Started playing guitar at 8 and really never looked back. I remember being so inspired from those early middle school years and on. it fueled a fire that propelled me to the touring life the same summer I graduated high school. You learn so much about your field from experience and I would say those early touring years taught me so much about growth, who I am as an artist, and where I wanted to be as far as goals go. My song “Six” on the latest record explains what I’m most proud of so well. It’s me at 26 talking to my past childhood self and all the things he will be able to accomplish someday at 26. Still think it’s crazy all the places across the world your music can take you to!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When COVID hit in 2020, I had been touring heavily for the past 5 years and it very quickly cancelled all of our upcoming dates. It was definitely an adjustment being home from the road for an extended period of time but it was a great period of growth for me as a human being. I found joy in the things that surround me and a home life that has kept me smiling. I think now that touring has resumed I am more balanced in the way that I live my life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it has to be seeing how the songs I write can change a persons day or even their life. Alot of what I wrote for my latest album “Set Fire to the Night” was focused on my struggles with mental health and practicing positivity through times of darkness, The fact that my form of self therapy has the power to heal others is extremely rewarding!
