We recently connected with Dylan Hughes and have shared our conversation below.
Dylan, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
After almost a full year of training and classes and exploring what this industry was and what it meant to me. Gaining experience and learning the ropes to what was extremely confusing to me at the time, as I had no prior experience at all. I got cast in my first role ever and the feeling I had was beyond anything I’ve ever felt. I felt an accomplishment that was different from any other I’ve ever received in the past.
It was then, in the fall/winter of 2017 that I fully knew that this was my calling. It was then, I knew I wanted to be in the film making industry.
Dylan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Honestly, my entire life I was never interested in acting or film making, I was a high school athlete who thought that kind of stuff wasn’t for me. But it was in 2017 when I was scrolling through the channels, I came across the animated movie Kung Fu Panda. I decided to give it a watch as I never seen it before.
While watching it something clicked in my head, and I was immediately inspired to get into the film industry. I thought to myself, “I want to do that” and then I signed up for some acting classes at BroadWay2LA and had my first professional acting job in 2018.
I am blessed and honored to have worked with some of the kindest and best in the industry. My acting coach “Mike Armstrong” pushes me to my limits and gets the best work out of me. I believe my hard work, preparation, dedication and versatility sets me apart from many others in this industry.
I have also stepped behind the camera and have written/produced short and feature length films. Something that i thought I’d never do but some of my most memorable times in the industry.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe there are two that stand out to me the most. One of them is being able to tell a story visually and the journey it takes to do it. Starting from the writing room and then ending on the big screen, is just an amazing feeling.
The second one is, watching others enjoy your work. There is no better feeling than watching and hearing the thunderous applause at the theatre as your movie’s credits roll.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Don’t be afraid to collaborate with other artists! Network yourself and meet new people who are in the creative arts. I have collaborated with talented people like Luke Hanson, Spencer Madison, Ariel Wiles and many more talented people. I promise you will find out that collaborative work environments will make everything flow smoother and it’ll help you grow as an artist yourself.
Never stop learning. There are many people who have been doing this longer than you. Do not be afraid to ask questions and keep your mind open and willing to learn.
And last but not least. Chase your dreams! If this is what you really want to do, don’t let anyone tell you no. Set your goals and keep working until you achieve them.
