We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dylan Furlano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dylan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
There is a moment that happens when someone looks at a photo I’ve taken of them and, they not only like it, but they feel like it truly captures who they are. Usually I can feel it when I take the photo, but I never get confirmation until I see how they react. These moments aren’t just about photos, but they are about making people feel seen and understood. It is about showing them how they look to others. The best of them. We are so often our worst critics that being able to give people a window into themselves from the perspective of someone else is a gift and the legacy that I want to leave behind.
Dylan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my business in 2019 because I thought I wanted to be a travel blogger. I pretty quickly realized that, while I loved taking photos, I didn’t like being the subject. Having experience creating content, I was able to connect with local fashion bloggers and creatives and help them plan and shoot content both efficiently and effectively. Working with this group of creative and business minded women has been the most rewarding experience and the reason that I do the work that I do. They are passionate, wise, and kind women who use their platforms to help create the type of world that they want to live in. I am so proud to be part of their journeys.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am so proud to say that referrals has been the number one way I’ve built my reputation and my business. My goal is to treat all clients with respect, professionalism, and always be my authentic self. I am not the right fit for every client – no one is. Communicating my values and personality has been key to making sure that I am booking clients that will have the best experience with me. I am so lucky and so honored that those clients have then passed my name along to their networks of equally amazing people. Obviously, in the beginning, referrals were much harder to come by because I had fewer clients. My advice is to stay true to yourself and the experience you want your clients to have and the rest will follow. Building a lasting business is like cooking in a crockpot, not a microwave. Good things take time.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to photograph people as they are and to reflect themselves back. Because of this, I do very little retouching or editing that alters how a person looks. My job is to capture the person at their best, not Photoshop things away. It is very important to me that my clients feel that they can be vulnerable and authentic during our sessions – those two things always produce the best results.
