We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dylan Demery. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dylan below.
Hi Dylan, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Emily and I had the idea and I started looking into what it would take to register an LLC with the state. It was inexpensive so I went ahead and did it. Then I started looking into getting the domain we wanted. The one we wanted was taken but it freed up in a couple of months so we got that. We started meeting monthly to talk through what we wanted the business to be. I set up a kanban board in Trello and we started working on tasks. We launched about a year and a half after we registered the LLC. We had to meet with suppliers, buy product, set up an online store, and launch.

Dylan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We started She’s Fly as a resource for women in fly fishing. I started fly fishing in 2011 and found that the industry was lacking in gear and services for women and we wanted to change that. We launched She’s Fly, a fly fishing company that focuses on products and services by and for women in fly fishing. We provide gear through our online store and also host lessons and retreats for women.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Emily and I met at her ex-boyfriend’s house party one night in April of 2011. Her boyfriend was a friend of mine and this party was my first time meeting his new girlfriend. We hit it off right away and stayed up talking until the early morning hours.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
We sell on our site and use Wix as our web platform. We have not ventured into Amazon, Etsy, etc. because many of our suppliers will not allow us to sell their products in those forums. We have considered it for our branded merchandise but have not had much time to explore that option.
