Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dylan Campbell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dylan, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Corporate America often fails to recognize makeup artistry as a legitimate career because it doesn’t fit the traditional 9-to-5 mold or come with a fixed salary and benefits. Makeup artists are entrepreneurs, constantly managing branding, marketing, client relationships, and evolving their craft to stay competitive. There’s a misconception that beauty work is frivolous or purely aesthetic, when in reality it plays a critical role in media, entertainment, fashion, and personal confidence. The industry generates billions annually but yet is still looked down as a “hobby” Until corporate America broadens its definition of professionalism and success, it will continue to overlook the artistry, hustle, and impact of careers like makeup artistry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Dylan, professionally known as Skinbydylll. I’m a 23-year-old professional makeup artist based in Council Bluffs, Iowa, serving clients throughout the Midwest and across the United States.
I launched my makeup career in 2020 during a time of global uncertainty, but I was confident in the path I wanted to pursue. Since then, I’ve grown my business to include 60–70 weddings annually across Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and beyond. In addition to bridal glam, I specialize in event makeup, quinceañera looks, and competitive glam for AQHA horse shows—traveling to major events to support contestants with customized, high-performance makeup applications at shows!
My signature style is full glam with an emphasis on breathable, flawless skin. I’m passionate about the transformative power of makeup and the confidence it brings to every client. What sets me apart is not only my technical skill and attention to detail, but also my authenticity and ability to connect with clients on a personal level. As one of the few male makeup artists in the Midwest, I strive to create a unique, inclusive, and empowering experience.
I’m incredibly proud of how far Skinbydylll has come and deeply grateful for the support of my family, friends, and loyal clientele. The beauty industry is competitive, but I’ve built my brand on passion, trust, and results—and I’m excited for the continued growth ahead.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The most effective source of new clientele for me as a makeup artist has been collaborating with other creatives in the industry. Whether it’s photographers, hairstylists, models, or event planners, these partnerships allow us to combine our strengths and reach a wider audience. Collaborations not only elevate the quality of the final look, but they also create valuable content for social media, which is a powerful tool for attracting new clients. I find that working alongside other professionals fosters creativity, builds community, and enhances the overall experience for everyone involved—especially the client. These joint efforts often lead to referrals and long-term relationships, making collaboration a key strategy in growing my business.

How did you build your audience on social media?
As a makeup artist, I built my audience on social media by consistently showcasing both my artistry and my personality. I made it a priority to post my work regularly—from flawless glam transformations to behind-the-scenes moments—so potential clients could see the quality and versatility of my skills. Over time, I learned that showing my face, sharing my journey, and being authentic helped me connect more deeply with my followers. People don’t just book makeup—they book energy, trust, and experience. By being both professional and personable online, I was able to build a loyal community that supports and shares my work. Social media became not just a portfolio, but a place where I could grow my brand and build lasting relationships.
