We recently connected with Dylan Allen and have shared our conversation below.
Dylan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A few years ago, I made a decision that changed everything: I took the risk to independently make Secrets of the Scouts, a raw, investigative film I’d been dreaming about since I was 12. No big company behind me. No grants. No outside funding. Just me—sacrificing time, money, sleep, and comfort to make something real. It was a massive gamble—financially, emotionally, and professionally—but I knew if I didn’t make it, I’d regret it for the rest of my life.
That risk paid off in ways I never expected. The work and visibility from SoS led directly to producing Life Without, a true crime podcast now in the top 5% of podcasts around the world. It also opened the door to producing Jamie Campbell’s Big Dad Energy, a comedy special that went on to win “Best of Fest” at Laugh After Dark in Vegas. Along the way, I built real partnerships and friendships—connections forged through doing the work, not chasing clout or recognition.
Most importantly, after years in the film/TV world, making my own feature taught me how to develop and pitch my creative projects professionally. I now have a slate of films, shows, and ideas ready to go—not because someone handed me the keys, but because I built the car myself. Every step forward has come from betting on my voice, my instincts, and my willingness to fight for the stories I believe in.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a writer, filmmaker, and creative force who builds everything from scratch. No gatekeepers. No excuses. Just real work. I’ve spent my life taking ideas and turning them into reality—films, shows, books, podcasts, and moments that matter. My work lives at the intersection of emotional truth and wild imagination.
I made Secrets of the Scouts—my first feature—because it needed to exist. No one gave me permission. No one handed me funding. I made it anyway. That decision rewired how I operate. Now, I run BLOKPARTY, a creative brand and storytelling studio focused on bold, original content that cuts through the noise.
What sets me apart? I finish what I start. Whether it’s wrapping a feature, developing a memoir about the journey, or building Perdido—a raw, no-holds-barred thrill ride—I go all in. And I’ve got more projects in the pipeline, ready to shake things up.
I believe in making art that’s alive—art that reaches into something deep, emotional, and true. For me, the work isn’t just creative—it’s spiritual. It’s how I connect with the world, with others, and with the part of myself that refuses to be silenced.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In making Secrets of the Scouts I started with nothing but the idea, and I ended with a fully independent feature film that people won’t be able to ignore. That journey tested me every single day. I gave up time, comfort, and certainty—but I never let go of the work.
I just kept showing up. Alone, most days. Tired. But determined. That’s what resilience means to me—not pretending you’re unbreakable, but choosing to keep going anyway. Fighting for the story, the vision, and the people who need it told.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
What a lot of non-creatives don’t understand is: this isn’t a hobby. It’s not a side hustle. It’s my entire life. Making art isn’t something I do—it’s who I am. Every project costs me something: time, money, energy, sanity. And I give it willingly, because it’s how I stay alive, how I process the world, and how I connect with others.
There’s this idea that if you’re not making big money or winning awards, it must not be “working.” But the real win is doing the thing. Shipping it. Standing behind it. Putting something into the world that didn’t exist before. That’s sacred work. That’s the fire. And once you’ve felt it—that quiet, unshakable knowing that this is what you’re built for—it never leaves you.
