Hi Dyesa, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I wanted to share with you how my journey into photography began, and it’s quite a modern tale. My interest in photography ignited through platforms like Instagram and Tumblr.
It all started innocently enough; I was browsing through Instagram, captivated by the stunning images filling my feed. The creative compositions, vibrant colors, and unique perspectives drew me in like never before. I found myself inspired by the stories these images told and the emotions they evoked.
Tumblr, with its vast array of visually striking content, further fueled my fascination with photography. I would spend hours scrolling through endless streams of imagery, discovering new photographers, and exploring different genres and styles.
What truly resonated with me was the ability of these platforms to connect people from all walks of life through the universal language of photography. I realized that I wanted to be a part of this creative community, to capture and share my own unique perspective with the world.
Dyesa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Photography has always been more than just a hobby for me; it’s been a passion, a way to capture moments, emotions, and stories frozen in time. Little did I know that this love for photography would evolve into a fulfilling profession, marked by the humble beginnings of people asking, “How much would you charge for photos?”
The transition from amateur enthusiast to paid photographer was gradual, yet profoundly transformative. It all began with a simple realization – the realization that my photography was resonating with others, eliciting genuine interest and admiration. Friends and family members were the first to notice, often expressing their desire to have their special moments captured through my lens.
Like many others, I embarked on the traditional path of seeking employment in a regular job. I worked as a head cook at an Air Force private golf course, while also pursuing a medical degree in nursing. Initially, it seemed like the logical choice – stability, financial security, and societal approval were alluring promises that beckoned me to join the workforce. Yet, despite conforming to these expectations, I found myself increasingly discontented and unfulfilled. It was during this period of introspection and soul-searching that I rediscovered my passion for photography. What had once been a mere hobby now emerged as a beacon of hope and possibility – a source of joy, inspiration, and boundless creativity waiting to be unleashed.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact that my work has had on the lives of my clients. Through my lens, I’ve had the opportunity to capture precious moments and transform them into enduring memories that they hold dear. It fills my heart when my clients messages me with such excitement and pure joy to express that they loved the pictures.
One such moment occurred when I had the privilege of capturing the happiest moment of a terminally-ill mother during her daughter’s wedding, just before she passed away. It was a bittersweet experience – one filled with joy and sorrow, laughter and tears. As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded of the immense privilege and responsibility that comes with being a photographer. Through my lens, I have the power to capture moments that transcend time, to preserve memories that will be cherished for generations to come. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In the world of photography, there exists a pervasive myth – the belief that expensive gear is the key to capturing stunning images. For many aspiring photographers, myself included, this notion becomes deeply ingrained, leading to a relentless pursuit of the latest cameras, lenses, and accessories in the quest for photographic excellence. Yet, as I would soon discover, the true essence of photography lies not in the gear but in the skill set and creativity of the photographer.
Back in the days when my fascination with photography was just beginning to bud, I stumbled upon the work of a few established photographer on social media. Their images had a captivating allure. that left me in awe with every scroll through their feed. Each photograph seemed to exude a sense of effortless beauty, a mastery of light, composition, and color that I could only dream of replicating.
As I digged deeper into their portfolio, I couldn’t help but wonder: what kind of camera were they using? Surely, such stunning images could only be captured with the latest and most expensive gear on the market. I found myself yearning for the same equipment, convinced that it held the key to unlocking the secrets behind their photographic prowess. Frustration began to set in as I struggled to understand why my photographs didn’t measure up, despite having the same gear.
It was during this period of realization that came click into my mind. What if it wasn’t about the gear after all? What if the true essence of photography isn’t in the equipment, but in the skill and vision of the photographer behind the lens?
With this newfound perspective, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and learning, determined to prove to myself that I didn’t need expensive gear to create beautiful images.
