We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dxngelo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dxngelo below.
Dxngelo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up, I was always drawn to music. If there was an instrument in my vicinity I couldn’t help but pick it up and start playing. I’m not sure what it was but I would subconsciously gravitate towards anything music related. When I was young, I would analyze songs that would play on the radio and try to figure out the melodies on the piano by ear. I think as a child I always knew I wanted to do something with music. I was physically and emotionally drawn to that stuff, almost like an addiction. As I got older, I started to really feel music for the first time. I had always had strong feelings about it but I think as time had passed I had become more in touch with my emotions and was able to really understand and relate to what these artists were saying in their songs. Something clicked around 17 years old and I just knew I wanted to be able to help people through my music the same way my favorite artists had done it. I started watching YouTube tutorials on how to record vocals, produce, and mix on FL Studio and this new addiction of recording had begun. I was living with my parents at the time and I didn’t have a room so during this period I would drag all my equipment into their closet in our apartment and record for hours on end every night. It was all I would ever think about. I wanted to become so good at the craft to the point where even if you didn’t listen to the kind of music I made, you’d still be able to appreciate it. After the countless hours and the hundreds of songs I made sitting in that closet I was slowly starting to get traction online and it felt amazing to know that people were relating and FEELING the music. This is what helped me realize I wanted to really do this music thing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is D’Angelo, also known as Dxngelo, and I’m a musical artist. My music lives in the realm of indie/indie pop. I’ve always been super into music as a kid but as of 2021 I started to take music seriously. My main goal as an artist is to make people happy and give them something/someone to relate to. For a lot of people music is a therapeutic outlet even for myself and I strive to be that for anyone who listens to my music. I just want to make people happy. There are so many stressors in the world, so many problems. Sometimes you just need to get out of your head for the moment and I like to make songs that help you get there.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You don’t need to be perfect. This is something that I still struggle with from time to time. As an artist, it can be very easy to become your own worst critic. I used to overthink every single song, every single take, every single mix and it killed my mental health and productivity. Yes, it can be beneficial to be critical of your own work but try not to hate yourself over every single mistake or flaw in your music. This mentality creeps back into your normal life and it can start this cycle of self-hatred in everything you do. Give yourself credit where credit is due. If you’re doing your best and giving it your all, your version of perfect will come. Don’t force it.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing people resonate with your art. Personally, there’s no better feeling than when someone tells you that your music has helped them through a difficult time. This is literally what I started doing this for and to see that it’s actually helping? It’s incredible.
