We recently connected with Dwayne Moyer and have shared our conversation below.
Dwayne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From a young age, I’ve always felt a strong pull towards music and dance. Growing up in a small town just outside of Philadelphia, my journey took a unique turn when I was adopted at the age of six. By the time I hit my early teens, around 12 to 15 years old, I was fully immersed in the vibrant world of DJing and dance.
Thanks to my parents, I was enrolled in the Broadway Dance Academy, where my life would change forever. It was there that I had the incredible fortune of meeting Randal Icon and the talented Hidden Characters dance crew. One of their members, Nieve, took me under his wing and taught me the art of DJing. Ever since that moment, music has been my passion and my playground, and I’ve had the opportunity to spin and dance in many different places along my journey.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Getting into DJing was my escape—the creative outlet that kept me out of trouble and helped me rise above the chaos of my childhood. It all started with my older brother, who was heavily involved in sound and lighting, and my other brother, a DJ and dancer. I admired them both and wanted to follow in their footsteps. I began helping out at events, from setup to teardown, and before long, my brother was letting me take the decks for a spin.
What drives me the most is the power of music to heal and spread positivity. There’s nothing quite like seeing people let loose and dance, feeling the joy and energy in the room. My unique background in dance gives me a distinctive edge—I draw so much inspiration from the rhythms and movements I’ve experienced on the dance floor and those magical moments I witnessed growing up.
I cherish my visits to the legendary Double Decker record shop in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where I’d sift through house music, breaks, funk, and jazz records, carefully selecting sounds to bring home and sample.
Among my proudest achievements, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to DJ for diverse organizations like Guess, Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, The Alternative Gallery, Union Pool, Blind Barber, Barrel, and Flow Fest, to name just a few. Each gig fuels my passion for sharing music that connects and uplifts.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a creative is the opportunity to share my passion and art with the world. There’s something magical about connecting with other artists, exchanging ideas, and fueling each other’s creativity. I absolutely thrive when I team up with DJs and dancers for jam sessions, where the energy flows and inspiration ignites. Plus, teaching classes to aspiring DJs brings me immense joy as I pass on the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my journey. It’s a privilege to contribute to this vibrant art form that has enriched my life so deeply!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One pivotal moment in my career as a DJ and dancer occurred during the pandemic when so many gigs were lost and the world was facing uncertainty. To overcome this challenge, my buddies from Honduras and I launched a Zoom dance battle that ultimately connected participants from 12 countries. Every Sunday afternoon, we gathered for a few hours to share music, stories, and celebrate our passion for dance, keeping the art form alive despite being miles apart. A heartfelt shout out to my family, the Lazy Donkey Crew, my friend Jose—cofounder of the jam—and Randal Icon, along with the Hidden Characters Crew, who supported us, judged the battles, and helped inspire many others to join in.
