We recently connected with Dwayne Kelly and have shared our conversation below.
Dwayne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, I believe it takes having God at the forefront, passion, perseverance, prayer, a great supporting team, money, dedication, confidence, and faith!

Dwayne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
An African proverb says, “For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”
As a teenager during the summer, my step-mother would have my siblings and I go fix small things in some of her rental properties. The larger jobs would be subbed out to older guys and we would learn from them. We hated it but I believe that it laid the ground work and some experience for what I’m doing now.
I started my handyman business after I was fired from my job at a country club after 10 years. I sat down with my wife and we talked and prayed for guidance on what to do next. I could either go to work for someone else and start over or start my own business. We choose the latter! So, DK’s Handyman Services, LLC. was born.
Becoming an entrepreneur has given me so much freedom. Being a business owner can be challenging, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I want my clients to know that hiring my company comes with trust, experience, and passion. We thrive on going over and beyond on each and every job performed. We are also very reasonable!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth. I believe that that’s the best form of advertisement for my business or any business. Real people, giving real testimonials of your services! People tend to trust the word of a close friend or family member who has hired you and you did an incredible job. I’m also thankful for social media where people can see your work, see you go live as you are working on job, ask questions on the spot, and share your post instantly!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My initial capital came from my 401k after getting fired from my job. I used the money get to a business license, insurance, a logo, shirts made, business cards, car magnets, and the tools I needed to do a wide range of jobs.
