Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dustin Wolf. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dustin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Life’s journey is filled with unexpected twists and turns, and how we react to the unexpected is what truly matters. The pandemic disrupted many of my personal goals, creating a pause that initially felt like everything had come to a standstill. However, it turned out to be a moment for deep reflection and a chance to pivot. While having a well-thought-out game plan, both short and long term, is important, the most significant rewards often await us when we take risks and step outside our comfort zones. Towards the end of 2022, I sensed that I had reached the limits of my growth within my current environment, both as an artist and as an individual. It was time for a change.
Changing my environment brought new energy and, subsequently, new life experiences. I took a leap of faith and embarked on a new chapter in Vancouver after consulting with my family, friends, and mentors. Shortly after my arrival, the writers’ strike halted work, leaving me wondering why I had come here and what my purpose was.
As I navigated this unexpected turn of events, I realized that it had been a period of significant personal growth. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. I had the opportunity to collaborate on an incredible short film with the acclaimed director Rukiya Bernard, forging valuable relationships, and strengthening my identity as an artist. Every day, I feel more aligned with my true self.
Sometimes, what we anticipate from a situation is entirely different from what it brings. This experience has tested my resilience, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. I see a bright future ahead, and I encourage anyone reading this: if you have an idea you’re afraid to pursue, take that leap of faith. You can always piece things together later.
Dustin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
People often ask how my dance journey began, and to put it simply, it was ingrained in my very being. I’ve always harboured a deep passion for music, performance, and the art of creation. My path started as a competitive dancer, a chapter that eventually earned me a prestigious dance scholarship at NYCDA Nationals, opening the doors to attend Point Park University. I dedicated four years to my craft at Point Park, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, I wasted no time; I packed my bags and set my sights on Los Angeles. Fortunately, I had the foresight to secure representation with Bloc talent agency during my senior year, providing a strong foundation for this new chapter.
As a Canadian, my visa allowed me a year in the City of Angels, and I seized every opportunity it offered. I immersed myself in training with the industry’s best, auditioned for top roles, and had the privilege of working alongside exceptional talent. That year was truly transformative, setting the stage for where I find myself today.
Shortly after, I landed one of my initial significant television roles with renowned creators Kenny Ortega ( Michael Jackson, High School Musical, Hocus Pocus) and Paul Becker (The Last of Us, Descendants, Prom Pact) for Netflix’s ‘Julie and the Phantoms.’ From there, my career gained momentum, leading to exciting projects like Disney’s ‘Sneakerella,’ ‘Bring It On,’ and contributing to the renowned ‘Star Trek’ franchise.
Throughout this journey, I’ve learned the significance of having a strong support system, knowing when to voice my thoughts, and when to lend an ear. Knowledge truly is power, and I’ve embraced the values of kindness, respect, and patience as my guiding principles each day. As they say, what goes around, comes around.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I believe my purpose in this life is to be a harbinger of joy, love, and positive transformation. As an artist, I recognize our unique ability to provoke thought and elevate important issues into the spotlight. My journey has had its fair share of hurdles, struggles, and pain, yet these challenges have also gifted me with resilience, gratitude, and an enduring optimism. I firmly believe that our greatest achievements stem from collaboration and acts of love, rather than spite. My family has been an unwavering source of support, and my ultimate goal is to continually honour their trust by achieving every aspiration I set for myself. My creative mission mirrors my personal one: to unite humanity and illuminate a brighter path for our world. Together, we can make a profound difference.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, few things are as fulfilling as witnessing your work ignite inspiration in others. Whether it’s a fellow creator or someone simply enduring a challenging day, the ability to elicit a smile or stir emotions is a profound privilege. Art’s richness lies in its boundless interpretations; what you intend to convey may diverge wildly from what resonates with your audience. Yet, therein lies its enchantment. Every time I create, it is infused with the essence of my heart and soul. If I can shift one person’s perspective or bolster their self-belief even slightly, I consider my mission accomplished. This craft is undeniably rewarding; the key lies in unwavering self-belief and persistence.
