We recently connected with DuragDevTheGoat and have shared our conversation below.
DuragDevTheGoat, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I think there are pros and cons to both sides. The con is I know I’d be a lot further along if I took the time to start building my brand earlier. The pro would be that I took those years to work on my faith and relationship with God finding myself essentially. As I reflect on that time I think to myself that I would it be worth making it to the top of the mountain if you don’t remember who you are when you get there ? In that regard I look at my journey with a sense of gratitude because it is my own and I can rest every night knowing I sought to give my best to every day.
DuragDevTheGoat, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well I started out as a music reviewer on Instagram. I would curate a playlist called Weekly Finds where I sought to find the next new artist. While I enjoyed it a lot I realized I my mental health was taking a pretty bad toll so I took a step back from it all. That’s when I started doing skits and different styles of content under a different username. I felt more like myself than ever before so I sought ways to dive deeper into that space and that’s how I ended up gaining a following. I have gotten the opportunity to collaborate with some of the biggest brands and names around which has been nothing short of amazing. I really love what I do and am seeking to take it to the next level.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think one of the most important lessons I had to learn was to respect my creative process. In this industry a lot of people will tell you that you have to keep posting and continuously put out content. What people sometimes fail to realize is that takes a toll on your mental health which in turn will stunt your creativity. Unlearning the run and gun mentality and taking my time with ideas so that I’m not so easily burnt out is probably the biggest thing I had to unlearn. It can sometimes be overwhelming seeing so many people advance in this industry yet you feel stagnant at point. Understanding that your journey is yours only and God will place you where you need to be at the PERFECT time is pivotal.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Not necessarily a goal or mission but just continuing to see where God places me next. I haven’t really spoken about it online but I was in a terrible spot in life when I started making content consistently. I felt a real loss of direction with my life and that effected my mental health. As I started to become more consistent with content it just felt like I was “in my zone” for lack of a better term. I never could’ve dreamed I’d be in the position I’m in a year ago so instead of making goals I’m just looking forward to where God places me next.
