We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Duncan Therrell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Duncan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When we started the band, we were starting from ground zero. What kept us creating was inspiration from great indie artists and our shared love of music. Our learning process was based on trial and error. Something that could have sped up our learning was probably watching tutorials. A lot of people really estimate the amount of knowledge there is for free on YouTube. The most essential skills we have learned is to just have fun with it. It doesn’t matter what people think, if you like it, put it out. There will always be people who will like (or hate) your work, and that’s just how it is. Some obstacles we’ve experienced is just the limits of not having some equipment. The upside of that is that it forces you to learn how to overcome those obstacles.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We’re Lost Foxes, a band from Greenville, SC. We’re made up of Duncan Therrell (lead vocals), Sarah Lowry (vocals), Ethan Cancino (keyboard), and Andrew McGaughran (guitar). Our main genre is Alt/Indie. We started making music as just a couple of friends in our bedrooms. Soon, we realized that we wanted to take this seriously. We started recording some demos and before we knew it we had our first EP. We’ve been making music ever since. We decided our mission would be to make music to help people. Music that people can relate to and can understand. Currently we’re working on our self-titled album. The first single from the album called “Petrichor” was released on September 29th on all platforms. We’re super excited to release the upcoming album and we’ve got a lot of exciting stuff planned for the future!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When we were first starting out, we submitted some of our songs to a site where people can anonymously rate music. We were excited to hear what people thought of it. After a few weeks, the reviews were in. Unfortunately, most of them were negative. It was pretty disheartening to hear, since we worked so hard on producing this music. Soon, we realized that this was a good thing. We could filter out all of the non-constructive criticism and just take the ones that would help us progress with our journey. The ones that were actually helpful. As a nod to this experience, we made a board with all of our hater’s reviews and called it “the Humility Board.” It now remains in our studio as an inspiration to how far we’ve come and an incentive to keep pushing.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing for us is seeing people benefiting our music. Bringing joy and validation to people through our music is something we love to see. We believe that music has a powerful ability to express emotion, sometimes better than words alone can. Making art that people can actually feel is a really profound thing for us.
