We were lucky to catch up with Drummond Fulcher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Drummond, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I truly believe that if more people were allowed to exist in their passions in life there would be so many more people operating in higher frequencies and wouldn’t be navigating life through a lack mindset. Everything I do with my business and podcast and social media platforms is about getting more people aligned with their passions and building connections. I believe we were all given special gifts and unique perspectives for seeing the world around us and when we are allowed to serve people with these extraordinary gifts we find a level of confidence and centeredness.
Drummond, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From a very young age I was taught that serving others was a gift we were all created for. I grew up with my grandfather being a doctor and always looked up to him but knew being a doctor was not my calling. It took me a while to figure out that my calling was in the realm of being a coach. Looking back I don’t know how I didn’t see it earlier because I can now see that I showed up as a coach in all scenarios in my life. If I learned a skill I wanted to share it with others so they could know the skill as well. When I went to college I was given a short list of majors from my family to choose from if I wanted their help to financially support me through my college journey. Doctor, Lawyer or Architect. I chose architecture bc I was way more creative and I didn’t see the other two as journeys I would be allowed to be very creative. While I was in college even though most of my classes were the classes I had to attend due to my major I also added some psychology courses in as my filler classes. A lot of my classmates thought it was weird that I chose those classes instead of classes that had lighter workloads and were considered more fun. I have always been fascinated with how everyone had such different views of the world around us. I wanted to know more about why that was and how I could gain more perspectives. While I was in college I became a freshmen counselor and I also worked with the international students that came to my university to help them all adjust to college life. After graduating from college and trying out the architecture career I realized I did not enjoy the work that came with being an architect. I did some soul searching for a bit and started to realize that the thing that brought me the most joy in life was holding space for others and helping them see the world from new perspectives and giving them room to explore their inner selves. I eventually found a job in the corporate world as a leadership development coach and realized that coaching was the field of work that really gave me a way to earn a living doing what I do so naturally and truly enjoy doing. I started my own coaching business as a side hustle and utilized my social media platforms as a way to get my mission out there for others to connect with. I started my own podcast series called Positive Talks and started inviting guests from all walks of life and backgrounds onto my series and had Live conversations with them around the topics and values they believed were important for others to understand and know about. I’ve continued to navigate through growing a business with no real knowledge of how to run a business and just decided I would learn along the way what I needed to learn. My most recent endeavors has been building a community where new coaches can come together and learn about the first steps they’ll need to take to launch their coaching careers. It’s been a very fulfilling experience and I’ve grown so much from being in a space where the niches of all the coaches I serve in my community have helped me see the vast areas of improvement coaches can help serve in. I do truly believe coaches are the people who will help us shift this world towards a brighter future. Most coaches have joined the ranks because their hearts called them to this line of work and I truly believe when it’s your heart calling you to the work it can only bring great change to the world around you when you begin that journey.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think my journey as an entrepreneur started a little different than most. I had already been creating content online for many years as a YouTube content creator. I used that platform to share my authentic journey as a member of the lgbt community and because of that I gathered a large following. By the time I decided to launch a coaching business I had already built a special connection with a very large community of people. For me when I launched my business I saw a level of success that a lot of new entrepreneurs don’t see at the beginning of their journey. The real challenges arose after a few years of having my business up and running when the pool of people that followed me had been served and I wasn’t growing fast enough to continue pulling in new clients. That’s when I started seeking advice and help from the professionals who had backgrounds in business or running a coaching company. Sadly there were a lot of people who didn’t understand my mission and lead me down roads that weren’t aligned with me and the way I wanted to do business. I started to repel the people I really wanted to work with because I was starting to operate my coaching business in a way that removed my unique style of connecting and serving others. It took me a while to recover from this and realize that even though I didn’t have a degree in business I did have a successful model of building a community and I also connected with so many of my clients in a way that served them and helped them achieve what they wanted to achieve for themselves. So I went back to the drawing board and started looking at my past successes and created a new business model that respected my values as a person. Owning a business can be difficult because there no one way of doing something and what works for one person may not work for the other. I definitely have learned to trust myself more in the process and realized that no business expert could tell me how my authentic values should exist in my business.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I have found that the best way to gain new clients is to always show up with value in every new space you enter. My Positive Talk series allows me to place myself in front of new audiences with every new episode I have but I have also started to look for ways I can show up in other people’s spaces and be of value and service to them and the spaces they have created to serve others. I think to often people jump right to the thoughts of how can I sell myself to others and I think that has put a sour taste in a lot of people’s mouths bc they can’t exist in spaces without someone saying and for just one payment or $99.99 you can have this special thing. I enjoy joining in on the conversations already being had and sharing my unique perspective and just being there and happy to be a part of the community. I also think when it comes to growing your client list it’s important for you to know the journey you can take them on. That way when you’re in new spaces you have a level of confidence that people will pick up on organically. It’s not about telling people you have the solution it’s about being the energy that people can feel and trust and deep inside connect to and know you’re someone that can help them with whatever you’re doing to serve others.
