We were lucky to catch up with Drew Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Drew, thanks for joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I have made is the time I have spent developing my skill set. We started the podcast in 2019, and I started filming when I was young. Eventually, I used the skills I developed to create a documentary on Yutes Media with Max Choriev. Due to my creative endeavors, I was able to get a job with Audacy, an entertainment company that owns many, podcasts, radio stations, and talent.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I initially got into podcasting when my best friend Kenny Brown and I recorded a radio sketch on our iPhones as a joke. Then, a few years later, after listening to guys like Joe Rogan, I Charlemagne tha God, we decided to create a podcast of our own. We then used our friends couch and microphones to record podcast episodes. As time went on we were able to purchase better equipment, thus increasing the quality of our podcast. Now that I work at Audacy, they allow us to record at the station which has many studios inside the building. This journey has motivated Kenny and I to keep grinding and breaking barriers.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of the podcasting business is the ability to have long drown out conversations with people that inspire you, You can cultivate relationships and get to know aspects about someone’s life that many would never know. All of this is possible just by executing on an idea.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Networking and Consistency. To build your brand you must be willing to work with Others inside and outside of your relm. Put your ego aside and don’t be afraid to ask for things. Many people will be glad they can help you build. Once you have a platform big enough, people will eventually reach out and ask how they can take part in what you have going on. Consistency is another key element to success. When you are consistent you build a good reputation as a creative. This also builds trust with your audience.
