We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Drew Henry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Drew below.
Drew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
In many ways, I feel like I was pushed off a cliff into entrepreneurship. While other business owners take gradual steps to create their own company — working side hustles and gradually leaving their 9 to 5s — I started with some higher stakes. I quit my job in March 2020 with other offers on the table. The next day was the start of the pandemic shutdown, and all of those offers disappeared. I had a lot of time to really think about what I wanted to do, and I began freelance copywriting for businesses that had little to no online presence and needed to set it up in an all-digital world. In the first 6 months, I had already outearned my 9 to 5 salary, and the business has steadily grown since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Before starting my own copywriting and marketing agencies, I’d worked a variety of marketing jobs, from in-house to agency settings. I also ran a successful blog, which really helped prepare me for internet writing and managing timelines for clients.
At Drew Henry Writes, my team of writers and I provide clients with compelling copy for their websites, blogs, or print materials that aim to educate, entertain, and convert potential customers into lifelong fans.
At Eat It Up Marketing, our content marketing team creates compelling social media and digital content pieces that keep our clients’ audiences engaged and attract new customers.
At both agencies, we focus on real, organic content that shares our clients’ stories.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I think the best strategy for growing a client base is putting yourself out there and delivering on your promise. I grew both of my businesses through cold pitching and referrals. Now that we’re entering the second year, we’re becoming recognized for our work and having businesses reach out to us, which is the ultimate sign that we’re doing something right.
Any advice for managing a team?
When working at 9 to 5s, I hated being micromanaged and treated like my ideas were “less than” based on the level of my role. When it comes to managing my team, I give everyone the independence they need to get their job done and allow them to act on their own ideas. I think the best way to keep morale up is to let everyone play on an equal field.
