We recently connected with Drew Ellefsen and have shared our conversation below.
Drew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
We’re starting to see healthcare become a more “patient-centered” model. Our healthcare system has primarily revolved around health insurance companies and large medical groups. Patients are starting to learn that they can shop for healthcare the same way they shop for everything else… with knowing the price up front. And because of this, we’re educating the market how to become consumers of their healthcare, and not a victim of our healthcare system.

Drew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my professional career in the fitness industry. After 5 years of running health clubs and making the same amount of money year after year… I decided I needed a change. I needed an opportunity to earn more, and to improve my quality of life. So that’s when I got into the insurance industry. I chose to focus on health insurance with the thinking behind that being, “everyone needs health insurance.” I achieved what I had set out to relatively quickly. I was making more money, working less, and enjoying a better quality of life. In 2014 I had my first daughter, and within 3 weeks I quit my 6 figure salaried job and decided to start my own agency. I finally understood what people meant when they say that you must have a “why” that’s bigger than you if you’re going to be successful.
When I started BMT, we wanted to be that organization that provided top notch service for our customers. There’s such a lack of service from health insurance agents.
As we grew, we were spending more time servicing clients than we were acquiring new ones. So, we decided to create a Healthcare Advocacy membership that, not only our clients can join, but anyone could benefit from our services. Today, we provide a service that’s unique in our space, and we’re quickly gaining a reputation of helping clients and being necessary piece of customer’s healthcare package.
I’d be lying if I said that it’s been sunshine and rainbows. Entrepreneurs definitely have a “screw loose” in order to endure the challenges of building a business…
…But I assume that’s why most don’t.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
When I made the decision to go on my own into the market I started with an organization that focused on life insurance sales. I felt like I needed to diversify at that point since the ACA rolling out was causing all kinds of confusion in healthcare. Companies were dropping left and right, and the future of healthcare was just so uncertain. Ultimately I ended up staying in the health insurance market because what the ACA did was make things more confusing, which made it that much more important for customers to work with professional health insurance brokers. My partner and I were #1 and #2 in production at this life agency that we we working with. We built a strong relationship and shared the vision of founding a health insurance agency. So, in July of 2015, BMT was official!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. That was the first book I read, and it changed my life. When I started reading books regularly and listening to motivational content, I started to make leaps forward in business. I was always a hard worker. But I was missing the mentality necessary in order to be successful. Once your mindset gets right, and your vision becomes clear… you’ll have the discipline, the desire, and most importantly the belief that you will achieve it!
