Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Drew Dugan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Drew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
The term “successful” is quite broad and often misrepresented in today’s society, therefore, you need to define what exactly being successful means to you. There is both your inward success and outward success that needs to be considered. Your inner world can be a success all on its own regardless of outside circumstance. When I was fighting cancer and addiction, I eventually figured out that I had to learn how to “be okay” no matter my external circumstance. Granted, some of these circumstances were of my own making, but I think the concept is still beneficial and has helped me be okay internally no matter the state of the world, business or other people. It is so easy to attach our worth and wellbeing to external factors rather than focus inward; it’s a daily decision. For the traditional worldly “success” most people think of when asked this question, I think it comes down to consistency and perseverance. If you never give up, then you will inevitably be successful in whatever it is you are doing. You try then fail, then get up and try again until you figure it out or get help from someone who can solve your problem. I’ve had to learn this in all facets of life, from naturally losing 130 pounds in 8 months this past year to being a recovering addict to the business world.

Drew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Drew Dugan and I am the CEO and co-owner of KMGLife Inc. We are an audio engineering and production college here in Denver, Colorado. “KMG” stands for Keep Music Going and that is our mission, to help people learn how to create and record music and make it their career. I am also a producer myself with a few different projects, while also helping produce music for others. One of my superpowers is hearing what an artist’s vision is and then being able to craft & mix the music so that it actually “scratches that itch.” I actually was a student of KMG years ago and slowly built my way into being an owner. We have loads of cool things planned with our new Denver location, from live-streamed performances to intimate shows and online course material so more students can get help keeping their music going! I am a proud cancer survivor and have 7 years clean and sober. I am currently working on writing a book about my story through addiction so that I can help people who are in a similar position. My most recent battle has been with being overweight. I finally made the decision about 8 months ago to put an end to it and lost 130 pounds by simply eating less and moving more. My favorite mantra is “from hardship comes growth.” Lean into the hardship and come out the other side stronger and more equipped! Finally, I have recently began to foray into real estate investing. I found an amazing group of people with an education company that has taught me the skills needed to begin building a portfolio. I’ve partnered with a colleague on starting a Fund and am really looking forward to helping more people with it that are experiencing foreclosure.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Sometimes it’s important and/or necessary to “pivot” in life. For me, a big pivot point was finally deciding that I can and will be the healthy, fit individual that I knew I could be. I made a plan, tried it, then failed for years and repeated that hamster wheel over and over. This past year I finally unlocked the code for myself in regard to losing the weight and it came down to simplifying things and staying consistent. Consistency is quite literally the key to unlocking all of life’s doors.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy here is word of mouth. Of course there are many other forms of growing clientele, but it all begins with your very first client. That client needs to be overwhelmed with value as a result of working with you and your business to the point where he/she can’t help but express that sentiment to others.
