Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Drew Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Drew, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What it really takes to be successful in this industry is maintaining relationships and practicing good business. A lot of people in this industry tend to grow as you grow the more you connect with other people. You should always NETWORK with the people next to you rather than the people who you feel are ahead of you. The people next to you are grinding it out and working on themselves to be better and you can be an asset to them in anyway possible. The best way to truly connect with people is to offer your services to help them grow as well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in St. Louis Missouri to a drill sergeant and a psychology professor. Two very intelligent and disciplined people. They also had a very creative side. They pushed me to be creative at the start of my life. My dad was a photographer who loved to travel the world during his time in the army AND always wanted to capture moments. At a young age he groomed me to see the world at a greater light than my own surroundings. He didn’t want me to be a product of my environment so he shared with me images of the world to really pursue what I wanted in life as well as a creative career.
- This comes on the 10 year anniversary as my professional career began in June 2013. Over the past 10 years, I’ve been able to meet all types of people and celebrities and go to all different types of countries. I’ve had a daughter in that time span as well as worked on multiple TV shows. I’ve shot over 300 car commercials for an ad agency in Chicago as well as been on two tours with a musical artist one in the United States and one overseas. Overall I’ve been to around 45 states and 13 countries.
Someone asked me recently if I ever thought that this would all pan out how it’s doing now and I can say for a fact I did dream of this but I never dreamt of it on a scale like it is now with me going so many places and meeting so many people. One of my biggest accomplishments is being able to teach what it is that I do to others especially younger people. I’ve been the only person like me in so many of the settings so I just want to be able to help other people get placements in the places that I’ve been hired to work.
100 documentaries, 300 car commercials, 50 yard commercials, 200 music videos, 100 product videos, and a bunch of other content to really push a 10 year mark is pretty insane. I’m just getting started though because I’m 27 years old and really wanting to take my time. The biggest thing that I’ve been learning is patience and not wanting to rush everything because it will all happen in due time.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I really want to open a movie studio or create a studio in my own city. A lot of my friends are creative and some of them have creative studios. That really inspires me to keep going so I really want to have a place where a lot of creators like me can come to create on any type of skill that they can imagine.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Right now I think I’m in a pivot for my journey which is been 10 years in the making. I just finished two tours in the first five months of 2023 and I’m feeling a bit burnt out by the entertainment industry in the music industry. Dealing with the business side of things has really taught me a lesson in where I want to go in life. Getting the right representation and figuring out what next steps to take requires a lot of patience.
A lot of my friends are constant creators and I always felt like creating content was the opposite of filmmaking. But constant creation when you have a brain can be a lot more lucrative when you just want to teach and show what life can be about. I have 10 years of footage saved up and I just want to push out what I can for other people to be inspired.
