We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DreTavius Parham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DreTavius below.
DreTavius, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
As an aspiring entrepreneur, I have focused on getting professional footage of speaking to a group of students; I have been calling and researching different programs where I could volunteer my services. It was exciting that I finally found a summer program that would allow me to volunteer my service. During this time, I invested in a videography to get the footage. The director reached out to me. She canceled on me the first time. I reached out to reschedule with an exciting feeling. Although, I had a feeling that I would get canceled on again. I woke up early that morning to prepare my mind mentally and put on my comfortable outfit. I called my videographer to remind him about this engagement. The program reached out to me and canceled on me again. At that time, I was sad and embarrassed. I knew I had to get my emotions together because I had to do a podcast. Towards the end of the day, I broke down and cried because I felt like I was not enough. Those emotions stuck with me for a week before I got over them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is DreTavius, and I began speaking to people at a young age. I’ve been talking to people since I was 15. I would speak to my peers at bible talks. My mother would always tell me that I would be using my voice in the sports industry. I knew that God had a plan for me to use my voice to make a difference. After my mother passed away from stomach cancer. I started volunteering my time to speak at the Boys & Girls Club, Schools, and high school football teams. In 2o21, I got serious about my brand and figured out what problems I solved. I invested in a coaching program and a website. I discover the problems that educators were facing based on research and conversations that I would have with other educators. I have developed a program that is targeted toward academic achievement, and a decrease in behavior problems. I will be testing this program this upcoming fall at a middle school. I have recently discovered that I want to provide an outlet for educators. I started a podcast called The School House Podcast. The objective of this podcast is to provide a safe place for educators across the nation. The biggest thing I am proud of is that I have never gave up on my dreams.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
In all transparency, I am still figuring out what is the best way to get clients. What I have recently discovered; I have joined a facebook group with other educators and adding them as friends. I would pitch my business proposal. I have one prospect from this strategy.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I can recall a time that I had opportunity to speak to a group of middle school students and I was canceled on twice . I had to unlearn my bad habits of allowing my feelings to get the best of me . I have matured in this area, and I understand that rejection plays a big part of the process.
